HSL 2015 Group 5A All-State Boys and Girls Basketball Teams Selected

Henrico’s Monte Buckingham selected 5A Boys Player of the Year and L.C. Bird’s Taja Cole named 5A Girls Player of the Year; Henrico’s Vance Harmon named 5A Boys Coach of the Year and Princess Anne’s Darnell Dozier selected 5A Girls Coach of the Year
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Virginia High School League 2015 Group 5A All-State Boys and Girls Basketball teams have been selected. Henrico’s Monte Buckingham and L.C. Bird’s Taja Cole, were selected boys and girls Player of the Year, while Henrico head coach Vance Harmon was named 5A Boys Coach of the Year and Princess Anne’s Darnell Dozier was selected 5A Girls Coach of the Year after leading both their teams to 5A state championships.
Eight (8) players were chosen on the first-team and eight players were selected for the second-team regardless of position. Only those players selected to the all-region teams were eligible for selection to the All-State team.
Each All-State selection committee is composed of eight basketball coaches (4 from each Region), and two athletic directors/directors of student activities (1 from each Region). Each Group has its own committee.
GREENSBORO, N.C.--The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams had 10 student-athletes honored on the All-ACC Academic teams, the conference announced Tuesday (April 28).
A conference-leading eight Cavalier women were recognized, including seniors Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.),Emily Dicus (Topeka, Kan.) and Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.), junior Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.), sophomores Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.), Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) and Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Cece Williams (Tallahassee, Fla.). Two men were honored -- junior divers Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) and Colby Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md.).
Casey was honored for the fourth time, while Dicus and Williamson were tabbed for a third time. Bartholomew, Jones and Simon were recognized for a second time.
Smith captured the 500 free and 1,650 free NCAA titles in Greensboro, N.C., in March, while Bartholomew earned runner-up honors in the 100 and 200 back. Simon placed second in the 200 breast at the national meet, while Bartholomew, Simon and Williamson were part of the 400 medley relay that placed second and the 200 medley relay that finished fourth.
The Virginia women won their eighth-consecutive ACC Championship, while the men placed eighth. At the NCAA Championships, the women finished fifth, their highest-ever team finish ever, while the men placed 33rd.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.
