NEW MEXICO News Announcement ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION For Immediate Release March 31, 2015 Contact Information: Dusty Young Associate Director Phone: (505) 923-3110 Fax: (505) 923-3114 NMAA Selects its March “Compete with Class” Honoree ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The New Mexico Activities Association is proud to announce that the Cobre High School Softball team has been recognized as the Compete with Class award recipient for the month of March. Cobre’s Softball team showed sportsmanship when Chaparral’s special education student, Santana Carrillo, stepped up to the plate. “They were all supportive and thrilled to help this young lady to feel a part of the team and the game,” Patricia Garcia (Chaparral High School) stated. “When Santana went up to bat, the pitcher was considerate and walked Santana. Once she was on base, she ran all the bases because the girls were hitting and doing well. Santana was able to score and when she crossed the plate she threw her hands up in the air screaming, ‘I DID IT! I DID IT!’ Her entire team cheered for her as if Santana had won the World Series.” Carillo’s family became emotional seeing the support she had from her teammates and her opponents. At the conclusion of the game, Cobre awarded Santana with the game ball. Sportsmanship is defined by the NMAA as the act of treating others in a respectful manner, taking personal accountability for ones actions, and responding with integrity while engaged in competition. The NMAA would like to thank and recognize the Cobre High School Softball team for setting a great example for the state of New Mexico. Their act of sportsmanship exemplifies the true ideals of the Compete with Class Sportsmanship Initiative - respect, integrity, and responsibility. More information regarding the “Compete with Class” sportsmanship initiative can be found on the NMAA website at www.nmact.org. Note that the NMAA will announce a monthly honoree throughout the remainder of the 2014- 2015 school year. Questions regarding this announcement can be directed to Dusty Young, NMAA Associate Director, at (505) 977-5385.

CHICAGO – The New Mexico State baseball team split a doubleheader with Chicago State on Sunday, April 26 in Chicago, Ill. winning 8-4 in game one and falling in game two 6-1.  The Aggies are now 7-31-1 overall and 4-13-1 Western Athletic Conference play while Chicago State is 11-30-1 on the season and 4-12-1 in league play.

The Aggies followed the play of starting pitcher Riley Barr in game one.  Barr picked up his second win of the year after he worked 8.2 innings, striking out three batters and giving up three walks and three earned runs.  Left-hander Robert Kraft came in and faced two batters giving up a walk and picking up a strikeout to earn a save.

The NM State offense posted eight runs on nine hits with centerfielder Quinnton Mack going 2-for-2 at the dish, including a lead-off triple to centerfield.  He scored that inning on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Joseph Koerper, who now leads the team with 22 RBI this season.  Shortstop Dan Kennon tallied three RBI in game one with his first RBI of the day on a walk in the fourth. His second RBI was on a single to right field in the sixth and his third was on a fielder’s choice in the eighth.

The Aggies fell behind 2-0 after the third inning but scored four runs on three hits, two walks and a hit-batsman in the fourth.  NM State extended the lead to 6-2 in the sixth scoring two unearned runs and added another two insurance runs in the ninth going up 8-2.  The Cougars scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth as the game concluded 8-4.

NM State didn’t hit the ball as well in the second game marking only two hits against the Cougar starter, who went the distance.  The Aggie pitching staff gave up six runs on 12 hits while the defense committed one error.

Kraft, who pitched 0.1 innings in the previous game, started game two and worked 4.2 innings while striking out one batter and giving up four runs.  Right-hand pitcher Matt Loeffler came in to relieve Kraft and threw the ball for 3.1 innings, striking out two batters while giving up one earned run.

The first hit of the game for the Aggies was a lead-off double in the top of the second by designated Brent Hermanussen, who is currently hitting .253 on the season.  Hermanussen eventually scored on a ground out by Lucas Martinez, who was filling in a catcher in game two.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth before adding another two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Neither team would score again as the game ended 6-1.  Aggie starter Robert Kraft fell to 0-3 on the year after the loss and Chicago State starter Will Abbott moved to 1-4 on the year.

The Aggies continue WAC play on the road facing Utah Valley, Friday-Sunday, May 1-3 in Orem, Utah.  Games one and two are slated for a 6 p.m. (MT) start and the series finale is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. (MT).  Friday’s game can be heard online with a link available at www.NMStateSports.com and the games on Saturday and Sunday will be available on the radio in Las Cruces on KRUX 91.5 FM and online.
