Use Surges at Mobile County Recycling Center
April 02, 2015
The Mobile County Recycling Center, in partnership with Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast and the Mobile County Commission, is excited to announce that use of the facility has jumped to almost 1,900 cars per week, or more than 250 per day, far exceeding the originally estimated visitor count since its opening in November. A recently-installed automatic car-counter revealed a much higher usage rate than conservative estimates indicated, said Sara Boccardo, Director of Sustainability for Goodwill Easter Seals, who oversees operations of the county facility at 7450 Hitt Road.
“Community support of the Mobile County Recycling Center has been overwhelming,” said Goodwill Easter Seals President and CEO, Frank Harkins, “It definitely shows that the people in West Mobile County were looking for a way to recycle.”
In addition to the new visitor count numbers, the agency also reports a huge volume of recyclables: more than 690,000 pounds of material in less than four months of operation, far exceeding the first-year plan for a total of 1.5 million pounds.
“These numbers speak to the widespread appeal of recycling and the desire of our citizens to be responsible stewards of our environment,” said Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson.
In order to handle this unexpected volume, Goodwill Easter Seals has supplemented its seven paid staff members with 70 volunteers, 12 court-appointed community service workers, and 11 students from Augusta Evans School, who have contributed over 900 hours of labor combined at the recycling center.
Their time and labor have allowed the facility to operate for 10.5 hours each day, seven days a week. And thanks to the growing number of volunteers, Ms. Boccardo believes the facility will be able to double its volume as long as recyclable goods keep coming in.
“The new numbers are a tribute to the capabilities of our partner agency,” said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, “And a clear indication that this project provides a much-wanted service for our county.”
The Mobile County Commission built the facility by tapping federal grants to Gulf Coast states from offshore gas and oil revenues. Goodwill Easter Seals operates the recycling center, relying heavily on volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

PRESS RELEASE CONTACT: Carrie Rice Marketing and Communications Director 256.535.2018 office, 256.326.2018 cell crice@hsvchamber.org Former Madison County Chairman Mike Gillespie to Lead Master Planning Process for Cummings Research Park March 26, 2015—The Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County announced today that Mike Gillespie has been hired as a contractor to lead the master planning process for Cummings Research Park. Gillespie is very familiar with CRP and Huntsville/Madison County having served 32 years as chairman of the Madison County Commission. Gillespie will work with the CRP Board of Directors, the CRP Advisory Council, the Chamber and the City of Huntsville to develop a starting point for a consulting firm to focus on physical characteristics and marketing for the nation’s second-largest research park. The master planning process will continue with the issuance of a request for proposals by the end of April with the final product expected by the end of the year. “During my 32 years serving the community as chairman of the Madison County Commission, I spent a great deal of time working with the Mayor and the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce on numerous economic development projects,” Gillespie said. “I am excited to be working again with Mayor Battle and the Chamber on this critically important project to develop a plan for the future of Cummings Research Park. CRP has been, and will continue to be one of the most important assets in North Alabama's economic future.” CRP was zoned a research park in 1962, and the current master plan is more than 30 years old. With more than 300 companies and 26,000 employees, CRP is one of the top economic engines for Huntsville/Madison County. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle is confident that Gillespie will be an outstanding leader for this important community project. “In this innovation economy, our CRP community continues to look for new and creative ways to connect bright minds with research and opportunity. I can think of no better person to lead that process than Mike Gillespie. His decades of leadership experience and depth of knowledge about the layers of smart economic development make him the ideal candidate to help Huntsville envision a CRP for decades to come,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. Charlie Grainger, Chairman of the CRP Board of Directors said, “Mike appreciates how we became the nation’s second largest research park and brings a wealth of knowledge to the economic development process.” And Richard Crunkleton, lead of the CRP Master Plan Advisory Council, added, “Mike and the Mayor’s Advisory Council have been working to complete the research that identifies challenges and recommends solutions to restore Cummings Research Park for its mission to ‘Transform Research Into Business Success
Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce
Pardon Our Progress... Exciting update on the Chamber's downtown construction project start date and IMPACT Wetumpka Campaign.
January 2nd, 2014
Members of the Wetumpka Community:
IMPACT WETUMPKA, a strategic capital campaign for the Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce designed to target, preserve and transform our aging, at-risk city block in the heart of historic downtown into a pathway for our future.
Campaign Goals and Accomplishments
This year your chamber raised $1.4 Million in pledges through an 8 month capital campaign conducted with the help of the WACC Board of Directors, staff and volunteers and Convergent Nonprofit Solutions, to protect and preserve the structural integrity of our existing Chamber building while adding much needed office space, conference and training facilities through a restoration and expansion project.
Through this initiative, not only will revitalization begin as an integral part of an active historic scenic and commercial area downtown, but new businesses will be created, more opportunities added and population growth will be enhanced in the Wetumpka, Elmore County and River Region.
Plans for the Chamber expansion of East Bridge and Hill Street include a Business Center with ADA accessibility, additional office space, sufficient restroom facilities, meeting and classrooms, distance learning capabilities and a business incubator to support and nurture our local entrepreneurs.
Economic Benefits
Construction Phase- IMPACT WETUMPKA will have a one-time effect of generating $1.7 million additional dollars flowing through our local economy.
Targeted Business- Located close to Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex, home to the AF Business and Enterprise Systems headquarters, many of these employees live in Elmore County and are interested in starting their own IT companies. The Business Development Center will focus on recruiting and nurturing these start-up companies and will offer:
- Business support and training facility
- Distance learning capabilities
- Business incubator targeting IT and other startup companies
- Classrooms and meeting rooms
Construction Phase One - Targeted start date for construction is January 7th, 2015
We feel confident that we went above and beyond, making every attempt possible to preserve two severely deteriorated buildings located at 107 & 109 Court Street. Unfortunately, due to years of water damage the cost to stabilize the buildings far outweighed their current and likely future value. In depth engineering and architectural planning indicated restoring these buildings would have cost well over $1 Million.
The decision was made after much discussion with key investors that the most fiscally responsible use of funds would be to mitigate the health and safety risks as well as blight through the demolition of these unsafe and swiftly deteriorating structures. We will be working closely with our Wetumpka Police and Fire Department throughout the process of construction to ensure all necessary precautions are taken for our neighbors downtown.
Our greatest desire and goal for this project has been to revitalize our historic downtown and create more opportunity for business and economic growth. We strongly believe this decision best supports that goal. We welcome all of our investors to stay engaged and involved with their thoughts, ideas and feedback throughout this process.
We are so proud of how far we have come and are looking forward to where we will go, together.
Sincerely,
Vanessa Lynch
Executive Director
Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce
