Children’s Center Honors Child Abuse Prevention Month

As part of a national movement to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month, several local business and community leaders are partnering with Children's Center in undertaking a child abuse awareness campaign this April.

Children’s Center is kicking off new prevention programs this April, starting with a nationally recognized child sex abuse prevention training. The Center is able, thanks to a grant from the Ford Family Foundation, to hire a Child Abuse Prevention Specialist. This initiative will begin Children’s Center’s prevention program by bringing Darkness to Light’s ‘Stewards of Children’ training to 5% of the adult population in rural parts of Clackamas County. ‘Stewards of Children’ is a 2-hour child sex abuse prevention training aimed at parents, teachers, and those who care for children. Children’s Center began using this curriculum in 2013 as part of a strategy to reduce incidents of child sexual abuse in Clackamas County, but is now able to expand the program.

“April is a perfect time to launch this crucial prevention effort,” said Children’s Center Executive Director Barbara Peschiera. “With continued support from our community, we hope to offer these workshops on a community-wide scale to educate more of the adult population in Clackamas County.”

As Clackamas County's only child abuse intervention center, Children’s Center provides medical evaluations, forensic interviews and family support services to children who are suspected victims of child abuse and neglect. Children’s Center, which is nationally accredited, plays a vital role in ending the trauma of abuse for local children. Children of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds are referred to Children’s Center for concerns of abuse. More information can be found online at www.childrenscenter.cc.

There are a number of ways to get involved and participate in preventing child abuse in Clackamas County during April, including:

Report any concern of abuse to the Clackamas County Child Abuse Hotline: 971-673-7112, or the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline: 855-503-SAFE (7223).
Stop by Children’s Center’s kiosk at Clackamas Town Center to pick up a pinwheel and child abuse information.
Host a Darkness to Light ‘Stewards of Children’ training that includes the five steps to protecting children from child sexual abuse.
Attend a Stewards of Children workshop on April 20th or 27th.
Request a speaker to attend your club, business, or faith community.
Distribute blue pinwheels at your place of business. These pinwheels can be retrieved from Children’s Center at no cost to you or your business.
Tour Children’s Center to learn more about what’s being done to help victims of child abuse in Clackamas County.
Make a donation at www.childrenscenter.cc to support child abuse awareness and education throughout Clackamas County.
