Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey tells Army delegation that sequestration is not the answer
MONTGOMERY, Alabama (February 23, 2015) – Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey on Monday addressed a delegation from the United States Army visiting Fort Rucker. The delegation is traveling to military communities throughout the country to gather information and testimonies about the potential impact of proposed sequestration cuts. Sequestration refers to the mandatory automatic federal budget cuts passed in the Budget Control Act of 2011. If sequestration goes into effect as planned on October 1, 2015, Fort Rucker could see a dramatic cut to funds and forces.
“Sequestration has been, and may continue to be, a serious challenge to our nation’s military readiness, as well as a challenge to the people and communities that support our military. I fully support Congress in seeking ways to reduce federal spending and the deficit, however, I do not support sequestration as a method to accomplish this,” Ivey said.
Lieutenant Governor Ivey spoke on behalf of the State and as Chair of the Military Stability Commission (MSC), a group created in 2011 to coordinate a statewide approach to protect and strengthen Alabama’s military assets.
During her remarks, Lieutenant Governor Ivey took the opportunity to announce the recent election of leadership of the Military Stability Foundation, a private, non-profit organization established to support MSC. Mike Ward of Huntsville was re-elected as Chair and John Mitchell of Enterprise was elected as Vice Chair.
Ward is Vice President of Government Affairs for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce and has served as a member of MSF since 2011. Mitchell, a Vietnam veteran and owner of several Wiregrass car dealerships, has been heavily involved in Fort Rucker support organizations for many years, including Friends of Fort Rucker, the Association of United States Army, Army Aviation Association of America, and the Army Aviation Museum Foundation.
“Mr. Ward and Mr. Mitchell realize the gravity of the threat that sequestration and BRAC have on their respective communities and the entire state, so I am confident they will help continue the work that the Military Stability Foundation and Commission have begun,” Ivey said.
Ivey concluded, “Alabama is at the ready. We read the same international headlines as everyone else and we are confident that our military service members stand competent and ready to defend freedom. Fort Rucker is vital to the Army’s combat preparedness. The training that takes place at Fort Rucker is often the difference in a matter of life or death on the battlefield. It is important that defense cuts and realignments be done in a deliberate and thoughtful manner. Sequestration is not the right way to go about that.”

Troopers Encourage Motorists to Exercise Extreme Caution as Winter Storms Move into the State
MONTGOMERY — Winter storm forecasts for north Alabama likely will result in snow‐covered or icy roads and hazardous driving conditions throughout northern Alabama. Alabama State Troopers encourage all motorists to drive with extreme caution and to avoid roadways when weather conditions are prohibitive. Additionally, State Troopers from Marine Patrol will assist Highway Patrol in patrolling Alabama highways and respond in requests for assistance.
Troopers offer the following tips to help ensure safe winter travel:
• Avoid travel, if possible, when icy or other extremely hazardous driving conditions develop in your area.
• Keep your vehicle in good operating condition. Check antifreeze levels and use windshield washer solution suitable for freezing weather conditions. Keep gas tanks at least half full.
• Remember that weather and roadway conditions can quickly change. Adapt speeds to existing roadway conditions, and be alert to changing weather and the possibility of icy, slippery roads.
• During inclement weather, turn on headlights and windshield wipers and maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• Pay particular attention to bridges and overpasses, which have a tendency to develop extremely hazardous “black ice.”
• Keep blankets, a first aid kit, a charged cell phone and other emergency supplies in your vehicle.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor local news for information on weather conditions and travel advisories and to contact Trooper posts only to report traffic crashes or other emergencies. Motorists with cell phones may dial *HP (*47) toll‐free to report roadway emergencies to a Trooper post. In addition, motorists are urged to be alert for emergency vehicles and personnel and to obey the state’s “move over” law.
Governor Bentley has declared a State of Emergency and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is working closely with our state partners including the Department of Transportation, Emergency Management Agency, Alabama National Guard to ensure the public is safe during this winter weather event. Birmingham City
Chuck Faush, Birmingham Mayor William Bell's chief of staff, is leaving City Hall after serving five years.
Bell announced Faush's pending departure Tuesday. Bell thanked Faush for his service and said he would remain involved with the city as an unpaid special projects advisor.
In an interview with AL.com, Faush said he was leaving the city to take a leadership role with a national entertainment company.
No details were given about when he would leave or if Bell would fill the position. The mayor also has a chief of operations, Jarvis Patton, who manages a significant portion of the city's staff and department heads.
"I have a new opportunity that allows me to return to media," Faush said in an interview. "I started with my father in broadcasting, and my new opportunity is to help lead a company that operates in radio, television and digital. That's an incredible opportunity."
Faush declined to name his new position or the company -- for now. He also said there is no hard timeline for his departure at the city as he works to ensure a smooth transition.
Faush said he was grateful for his time in the administration. The former broadcaster and producer often spoke on Bell's behalf and was the face of many of the city's most visible projects.
"I'm just so thankful that the mayor has allowed me to define the title rather than the title defining me," Faush said of his tenure. "When I went to him to talk about this new opportunity, I said it was national, it would allow me to continue to have a presence in Birmingham and a voice on a bigger platform, and he blessed it."
Bell described Faush's future unofficial role as an executive on loan. Faush said he took the idea of his new unofficial role to city attorney, Ralph Cook.
"(He) said that I could volunteer my time and I could have a role as senior advisor to the mayor and continue to help on projects as volunteer," Faush said. "I'd like to think that it's new ground, but it is not new ground."

Selma Mayor George Evans to Join Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell at President Obama's State of the Union Address
Jan 27, 2014
Press Release
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) will be joined by the Mayor of Selma, Mr. George Evans, at President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday. Mayor Evans is currently serving his second term as Mayor of Selma. Evans was Selma’s first black City Council President and is the second black mayor in Selma’s history.
“It is a tremendous honor to have Mayor George Evans as my guest to President Obama’s State of the Union address. Mayor Evans has dedicated his life to education and public service. I am truly proud of the barriers he has broken throughout his career as the first black Superintendent of the Dallas County School System, Selma’s first black City Council president and the city’s second black mayor,” said Rep. Sewell. “This March, the City of Selma will be commemorating the 49th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March, preluding the 50th Commemoration which will be held in 2015. In light of these historic commemorations, I found it befitting to invite Mayor Evans as my guest due to the pivotal role our city played in the Civil Rights Movement. It is important that we never forget the sacrifices made on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma and the dynamic role that our city’s leaders have played in preserving that precious history.”
“As Mayor of the historic city of Selma, Alabama, I’m thrilled and humbled to be invited to share this experience with leaders and ordinary people from all walks of life,” said Mayor George Evans. “As Selma prepares to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the Selma to Montgomery March, and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, I am reminded of efforts to turn back the clock on voting rights. When elections unfolded in 2008, I became Mayor of Selma, AL and at the same time, then Senator Barak Obama became President Obama. We share Selma as a touchstone. Our elections would never have been possible without sacrifices of those who worked hard and marched for equality and voting rights for African Americans. We must continue to be vigilant and to oppose any efforts to curtail access and tighten voter restrictions not only in Alabama, not only in the South, but all around the country.”
