Statement from Alaska Chamber on Medicaid expansion

All News Releases

February 06, 2015

Anchorage, AK – Alaska businesses will pay for uninsured Alaskans through the proposed Medicaid expansion or through increased health care costs. The Alaska Chamber supports Medicaid expansion for this reason. The Chamber’s support for Medicaid expansion ends when the federal funding ends or falls below its initial promise. Our support also ends if expansion exacerbates the State’s fiscal situation.

The Chamber’s top priority this year is reducing State spending. Alaskans agree it’s time for the State to do what we as individuals and Alaska businesses do every day – live within our means. We support limiting total FY 2016 unrestricted General Fund spending to $4.5 billion or less, and believe State budget reserves should be used to aid in the transition to a sustainable budget.

Medicaid expansion must go hand in hand with Medicaid reform, limiting the State’s fiscal liability today and for future generations. Alaska’s Medicaid program is a key driver of State spending and is currently on an unsustainable path. Our current Medicaid system provides coverage not required by the Federal government. In fact, such optional services cost $481 million in FY 2013. The Chamber views the State’s fiscal situation as an opportunity to right size Alaska’s Medicaid program to put it on a more sustainable path.

Application Deadline Extended for the 2015 Ethel Lund Village Health Occupations Program

All News Releases

March 09, 2015

SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) is extending the application deadline for the 2015 Ethel Lund Village Health Occupations Program (VHOP) that takes place from April 20-24 in Sitka. There are still several openings for this year’s program so the deadline is being extended to Tuesday, March 31st.

This is an excellent opportunity for Southeast Alaska students. Each year, the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) selects several Southeast-area Native students interested in health careers for VHOP, and the students spend a week at the SEARHC S’áxt’ Hít Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital learning about different health careers and educational opportunities. Last year’s group was the largest to date and included students from high schools all over Southeast Alaska.

The goal is to cultivate and encourage an interest in health care, and hope that health careers grow out of those efforts. The health field is growing, which means plenty of job opportunities for those with the proper training. Additionally, health care related careers usually offer good pay and employee benefits, as well as the satisfaction of helping others.

Some of the activities for this year’s program include job shadowing with health care professionals at SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, hands-on activities with SEARHC dental staff, and training at University of Alaska Southeast-Sitka. The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony.

Applications from Tribal Citizens must be received no later than March 31, 2015 in order to be considered. Each application must be accompanied by the student’s most recent transcript and two letters of recommendation.

For more information about the VHOP program, contact SEARHC Recruiter, Louise Brady at (907) 966-8903 or lbrady@searhc.org. You may also visit http://www.searhc.org/students/high-school-programs-vhop.

Ninilchik Chamber of Commerce

Ninilchik Chamber of Commerce’s motivation behind organizing the Clam Scramble is tri-fold. First, Clam Scramble is a fun, family-orientated summer solstice event in a central, easily assessable location on the Kenai Peninsula. Second, the Clam Scramble will be a fund-raiser for the Ninilchik Emergency Services. Most importantly, Clam Scramble is a vehicle to raise public awareness about today’s razor clam conservation issues.

“We have a golden opportunity to raise public education level of the Cook Inlet razor clam conservation efforts. The harvest regulations have been changing the past few years and clam harvesters should be aware of the best ways to responsibly harvest this iconic marine resource.” said Jessica Russo, lifetime Ninilchik resident and Chamber Vice.

The race winners will be declared in four categories and will share a bounty of merchandise, services and cash. The Individual race category is open to runners from 16 to 55 years old. Registration fee will be $25 pre-race day. Seniors from 55 to 101 years old will receive a $5 senior discount on the race fee and the Junior division will be just $15 for 8 to 15 year olds on a toned-down Juniors Course. The Team Division fills out the Clam Scramble lineup and is open to teams of 2 to 8 people ages 16 or above. The Team Division registration fee is $75 pre-race day. “I am excited that the NES will be involved on multiple levels at the Clam Scramble” said NES Chief and Safety Officer for the Clam Scramble, David Bear “We will be helping protect the runners’ safety, receiving some of the financial benefits of the race and NES will be competing in the Team Division”.
