State Chamber Names 2015 Superstars in Education Award Winning Programs

The Delaware State Chamber of Commerce and its affiliate, The Partnership, Inc., are pleased to name the 2015 Superstars in Education award winners, who will be recognized at a  reception and awards ceremony on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 4:45 p.m. at the fabulous new theater at The Cab Calloway School of the Arts.

Since 1989, Superstars in Education has honored Delaware schools and educators who have implemented and sustained a creative, unique program, or a teaching practice that shows measurable results and raises student achievement. This statewide awards program is funded by the business community.

While the Superstars in Education program rewards quality instruction and student achievement, there is an emphasis on the partnership with the business community and its investment in the future. Thus reinforcing The Partnership’s original mission of encouraging private sector involvement in workforce development and education.

The event will highlight programs that focus on critical workplace competencies like science and technology, as well as curriculums that support the development of student’s personal and vocational skill sets. School-to-business partnerships will also be recognized for their systemic contributions to increasing student achievement, career awareness and workplace skills.

Delaware’s future depends on the foundation we build in our schools today.  It is imperative that today’s students have tangible skills when they are ready to enter the workforce. Whether college bound, preparing for a trade job or working in the manufacturing world, students need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be productive employees and citizens.

The Superstars in Education Selection Committee considered 30 nominations from public, private and parochial schools from around the state. Six winners were selected to be honored this year.

Leaders from both the education and business worlds will make appearances during the May 4 reception and awards ceremony. Governor Jack Markell, is scheduled to speak, along with DSCC president Rich Heffron.

The cost to attend the event is $25 per person. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information about the event, or to register, click here.

Plan Ahead to Improve Healthcare Decision-Making

You have created a lifetime of memories with your family and friends. You have cared for them, worked for them, worried about them, and so much more. But have you talked to them about your healthcare wishes? As you age, you may become less able to take care of yourself and less able to make your healthcare decisions on your own. What if you cannot speak? Will your loved ones know your wishes? Will your wishes be honored?

Ask yourself what type of care you would want.

This is an important step prior to talking with your family and friends. Identify what types of treatments you would prefer. Write down your wishes in forms such as a Living Will and/or Healthcare Power of Attorney.

These wants can transform depending on medical changes.

Planning ahead for healthcare can help you and your family.

Advance care planning not only frees you from worry about how you are going to be treated; it also lifts a burden of responsibility from those you love. By taking action to plan your care in advance, you can give your loved ones peace of mind- not tough choices.

Talking with your loved ones is the most important step.

When your loved ones know what is important to you, much can be done to make sure you receive the healthcare you want. They can also help to ensure your health services are coordinated the way you want them to be. Sharing your wishes for healthcare is the best way to plan ahead to avoid stress and confusion.

Your doctor can help you understand the options for your care.

Talking with your doctor will help you and your healthcare agent to understand the choices for care. Understanding your options helps ensure that you and your healthcare agent will make choices that will correlative to your wishes.
