North Caroline Secretary of State
North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State NEWS March 13, 2015 Elaine F. Marshall For Immediate Release Secretary of State Contact: Liz Proctor (919) 807-2154 Gaston County Man Charged with Securities Fraud RALEIGH – Law enforcement agents with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Securities Division on Thursday charged Micah Christopher Wilson, 59, of Gastonia with two counts of felony securities fraud and two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Investigators allege Wilson defrauded victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Secretary of State investigators allege Wilson deceived multiple victims in Gaston and surrounding counties into investing money with him and his company, Creative Financial Concepts, Inc., by guaranteeing them they would earn at least 8-percent interest on their principal in an unspecified investment vehicle. Investigators believe Wilson instead converted the funds to his personal use, as well as to give payments to other investors. He also failed to tell investors that he was not registered to sell securities. The Secretary of State’s Office worked in partnership with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office on this case. Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall also thanked the Gastonia Police Department for their assistance. Wilson is now in custody in the Gaston County Jail under a $1 million bond. “This is an ongoing investigation,” Secretary Marshall said on Friday. “We strongly urge anyone who believes they may be a victim of Mr. Wilson or Creative Financial Concepts to contact the Secretary of State’s Securities Division at 1-800-688-4507.” Anyone considering an investment should always first call the NC Secretary of State’s Securities Division at 1-800-688-4507 to make sure the person offering the investment, and the investment itself, are properly registered.

Spring Operation Medicine Drop Begins March 15
RALEIGH – The State Bureau of Investigation will destroy millions of doses of prescription medicines following Operation Medicine Drop, March 15-21.
Residents can take unused or expired pills, including pet medications, to a designated drop-off site in their community. The sites can be found on the Safe Kids webpage: https://apps.ncdoi.net/f?p=102:24:0::NO:::.
Safe Kids organizes the event, provides a listing of the drop-off sites and works with law enforcement agencies to provide security at each location. Narcotics and other dangerous drugs are among the pills frequently turned in to disposal sites.
Twice a year, Safe Kids North Carolina partners with the N.C. Department of Insurance, the State Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement agencies to give people a secure place to dispose of their drugs properly. The operation helps prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands such as young children and drug addicts and abusers – or from being flushed down drains which poisons water supplies. “I encourage the public to take advantage of this beneficial operation,” said B.W. Collier, acting director of the State Bureau of Investigation. “This is the safest way to dispose of old medications, especially to keep them away from young children.”
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol helps transport the drugs to an Environmental Protection Agency-approved incinerator. The Drug Enforcement Administration pays to have the medications destroyed. The State Bureau of Investigation reported that nearly 7.4 million expired or unused pills were collected across the state during Operation Medicine Drop last October.
Medications are the leading cause of child poisoning, according to Safe Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps parents and caregivers prevent childhood injuries.
According to DEA, medicines that languish in medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse, and that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends. About 1,000 fatal drug overdoses occur each year in North Carolina.
“Prescription narcotics are the leading cause of drug overdose in the country,” said SBI Special Agent in Charge Donnie Varnell of the Diversion and Environmental Crime Unit. “We hope everyone takes advantage of Operation Medicine Drop and disposes of their medications responsibly.”

Mayor’s Mentoring Alliance Hosts Awards Ceremony
Local mentors, businesses, agencies and mentees receive awards
Charlotte, NC — The Mayor’s Mentoring Alliance celebrated National Mentoring Month last night by honoring local mentors at its annual awards ceremony. Mayor Dan Clodfelter recently proclaimed January as National Mentoring Month in Charlotte and joined the nationwide movement to raise awareness of the benefits of mentoring by recognizing local mentors. During the ceremony, awards were presented to Charlotte’s mentor, mentee, best practices agency, group mentors and business partner of the year.
Rindy Kirkman was named Mentor of the Year, an honor awarded to a mentor who has worked tirelessly to make an impact on youth. In addition to implementing tutoring and summer reading programs for children at Woodstone Apartments, Kirkman also provides GED and high school diploma tutoring to local residents. After seeing a need for educational resources in her community, Kirkman, who is the Woodstone Apartments community manager, also developed an onsite community library for all of the residents in her apartment complex.
Also receiving awards during the ceremony were: 100 Black Men of Charlotte for Group Mentors of the Year, Bank of America for Business Partner of the Year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte for Best Practices Agency of the Year, and Diamonique Burton for Mentee of the Year.
“This year, the Mayor’s Mentoring Alliance celebrates 20 years of mentoring support and the power of community partnership in mentoring. I am proud of the rich history Charlotte has in support of mentoring and look forward to the next 20 years,” Clodfelter said. “Our mentors have made a lasting impression on our community’s children and their investment will continue to yield a lifetime of positive results.”

The new sidewalks (pictured at right) fill in a gap of existing sidewalks, connecting neighborhoods along Wrightsville Avenue with commercial areas along Dawson Street and Oleander Drive. In addition, 60-feet of the existing sidewalk was repaired.
The city anticipates that all bond projects should be complete within the next 5-7 years. Click here to see a presentation outlining a schedule of all 38 transportation bond projects. Visitwww.wilmingtonnc.gov/transportationbondfor more information.
