PIAA Officials Service Awards Update On July 23, 2014 PIAA Board of Directors unanimously passed a motion made by the Officials’ Council whereby all officials completing 30 years of service will be honored at the Officials’ Convention Banquet. Originally, only those male officials with 35 years of service and female officials with 25 years of service were recognized at this banquet and presented with their honoree watch and certificate. The rationale for the difference in years is PIAA did not actively register female sports officials until the early to mid-1970’s. Therefore, in a spirit of recognition of all sports officials, the 25 and 35 year benchmarks were established. The Board of Directors felt that this change in policy was necessary to recognize all officials in a uniform fashion. Those female officials that had completed 25 years of service and who had been invited to last years banquet will still be invited to the 2015 banquet. They will continue to be invited until they reach 30 years of service when both genders will be aligned and all officials serving 30 or more years will be invited and recognized at the Officials Convention Banquet. PIAA feels it is important to recognize those individuals who have been registered as a sports official for 30 years in front of their peers and guests for their active registration as a PIAA sports’ official. It is a celebration of their tenure as a sports official and a commitment to share a night of experiences, photographs, anecdotes upon those individuals who have provided this service to schools of this association. Once an official receives their watch, if it needs repair for any reason, or does not work properly, an honored official may return it to the PIAA Office for a replacement at no cost. This, in essence, makes this commemorative watch have a lifetime guarantee for the registered sports’ official.

Last Day to Vote for Johnstown in the Kraft Hockeyville Contest!

Wednesday, 04.29.2015 / 10:30 AM ET / Features

By Michelle Crechiolo

Phil Bourque was never drafted. But after playing two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, he was invited to attend Penguins training camp as a free agent.

So the Boston native drove down to Johnstown, Pa., where training camp was being held – and where he took his first step towards his dream of playing professional hockey when he signed a contract with the Penguins.

“I have a special, special connection with Johnstown. I had my first training camp there, but more importantly, I signed my first contract there at the War Memorial,” said Bourque, who went on to win two Stanley Cups with the Penguins during his career. “Baz Bastien was the general manager, had a little corner office, got me going in my career. So it has a special, special place in my heart.”

Johnstown, which is about an hour and a half east of Pittsburgh, is also the hometown of a few Penguins employees. Head equipment manager Dana Heinze, head athletic trainer Chris Stewart, and senior manager of client services Amanda Susko are all from there. And they, along with Bourque and the rest of the Penguins organization, want fans to vote for Johnstown in the final round of the Kraft Hockeyville contest.

The community came together to send Johnstown’s Cambria County War Memorial to the final round of the Kraft Hockeyville contest, putting the town and rink that inspired the iconic film “Slap Shot” one step closer to the title of America’s most passionate hockey community.

The contest, sponsored by Kraft, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association, rewards the winning community with $150,000 in rink upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game – in addition to the title of Kraft Hockeyville, USA.

Voting ends at midnight tonight (Wednesday). Votes can be cast by clicking on Johnstown’s link atKraftHockeyville.com, calling toll free 1-855-255-5975, or by texting “Cambria” to 35350. Individuals can vote 50 times per method, per day.

The Cambria County War Memorial opened in 1950 to serve as an entertainment and sports arena, as well as a living memorial to the county’s 1,000-plus military veterans who gave their lives in service to their country. It is now home to the Johnstown Tomahawks junior hockey team of the North American Hockey League.

But more notably, the famous 1977 film “Slap Shot” was shot primarily in Johnstown and at the War Memorial. The movie’s fictitious Charlestown Chiefs team and the iconic Hanson Brothers characters were inspired directly by players from the Johnstown Jets hockey team, who played at the arena for 27 years from 1950 to 1977.

As Draft Nears, What's True Or False?

Posted 3 hours ago

A disclaimer to begin: I don't know what the Eagles are going to do with this 2015 NFL draft. I don't know how the board looks in the draft room. I think only Jeffrey Lurie, Chip Kelly and Ed Marynowitz truly know the plan ...

A disclaimer to begin: I don't know what the Eagles are going to do with this 2015 NFL draft. I don't know how the board looks in the draft room. I think only Jeffrey Lurie, Chip Kelly and Ed Marynowitz truly know the plan.

That said, it is with great anticipation and excitement that I look forward to the proceedings on Thursday through Saturday and, honestly, the post-draft frenzy of signing players who weren't selected.

The Eagles have eight picks in the seven rounds, including the 20th selection in Round 1. There are some needs for this football team that seem fairly obvious -- the Eagles could use some ooomph at wide receiver, some depth along the offensive line, answers in the secondary. Another pass rusher or two is something that every team desires.

But "obvious" isn't the conversation at this time of the year, not with the usual pre-draft hysteria combined with an offseason of franchise-rattling personnel moves that have been made. The Eagles are mentioned in just about every extraordinary scenario tossed around by the media in the hours leading up to Tampa Bay kicking things off "on the clock."

What's real? What's fantasy? Let's discuss (and remember the disclaimer) ...

  • Will the Eagles make the move and trade up for Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota? As the hours melt into late Wednesday and into Thursday, that drumbeat continues, ignoring the several references that both head coach Chip Kelly and vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz have made about "not mortgaging the future" for any moves. So will the Eagles give up multiple draft picks and possibly multiple players to get to picks 2-6? The perspective here says, "no," but it comes with the above disclaimer and the caveat that nobody can rule out anything with Kelly, certainly not after the way this offseason has gone. The Eagles are really pleased with Sam Bradford at quarterback. He's at the NovaCare Complex every day in the offseason program. He is working hard. He is going to be an outstanding fit in this offense when he gets healthy.

  • What are the Eagles considering should they stay at 20? There are a lot of options and the names you hear are Connecticut cornerback Byron Jones, multiple wide receivers, Alabama safety Landon Collins and many more. Nobody knows. Who do the Eagles like? Who do they love? Only a few men know. The Eagles have visited with 60 players both at the NFL Combine and at the NovaCare Complex in the last few months. They've got their board stacked. They know what they want and who they desire. From here, it seems more likely that the Eagles will stay put at 20 or move out of 20 to gain more draft picks, but how can anyone truly know at this point? I'm not sure, honestly, that Chip Kelly no doubt, 100 percent, knows who he is going to select until the time comes for the Eagles to be on the clock.

  • How active will the Eagles be in the trade market? Could be very active, actually. Kelly has made it clear that he's open to making moves. He has his vision for what he wants this 2015 roster to look like. The Eagles have changed out key positions throughout the offseason. There may be some trades made in the three-day draft window as the Eagles deal a veteran or two or three and get back some draft picks. There may be chances for the Eagles to gain a veteran player to fill a need on this roster. I think the trade portion of the weekend could be quite active. No specifics. I just think that Kelly has his plan firmly in place and knows the players he is interesting in moving or those he may want to acquire from other teams.

  • How big will next year's draft play in the next three days? Could be significant. How valuable is acquiring a high draft pick next year -- remember, the Eagles sent their second-round draft pick to the Rams in the deal that brought Bradford here -- for either a pick or a player now? It's something to keep an eye on.

  • A bold prediction from me: I think Kelly plays it fairly conservatively within each round in terms of moving draft picks. He wants to add draft picks, not deal them away.

  • It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the Eagles pass on the quarterback position in this draft. I think they're pleased with what they have here. Bradford and Mark Sanchez are 1-2 -- Sanchez will compete for the starting job and that's a fair mindset for him to have -- and then Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley are battling for No. 3.G.J. Kinne is in the mix as well, and he'll try to earn a roster spot any way he can, even if that means he's a special teams, jack-of-all-trades player.

In the end, though, I don't know what the plan of attack is going to be. From this vantage point, the Eagles could use some help at wide receiver, on the offensive line, in the secondary and even on the edge rushing the passer. Kelly wants to improve every corner of his roster, rightfully so.

The winds are whipping and the rumors are flying and it's almost here. The draft is the exclamation point for a wild offseason, with three days to improve the foundation of the roster through the draft. I don't know what will happen. You don't know, either. That's why it's so much fun, to see the plan come into focus within the frenzy of an NFL draft weekend.

Steelers announce 2015 regular-season schedule

Posted Apr 21, 2015

The Steelers will appear in five nationally televised primetime games, including the first game of the NFL's 2015 regular season.

The Steelers will appear in five nationally televised primetime games, including the first game of the NFL’s 2015 regular season, it was announced today when the NFL unveiled its 2015 regular season schedule.

Pittsburgh will kick off the NFL’s 2015 regular season slate at the New England Patriots in Week 1 (Sept. 10) on Thursday night (NBC, 8:30 p.m.).

Two of the Steelers’ four other nationally televised primetime contests occur in back-to-back weeks. Pittsburgh will host its AFC North Divisional rival Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field in Week 4 (Oct. 1) on Thursday Night Football (CBS/NFL Network, 8:25 p.m.) before traveling to San Diego for a Monday Night Football (ESPN, 8:30) match-up at the Chargers in Week 5 (Oct. 12).

Pittsburgh’s remaining two nationally televised primetime games take place in Weeks 13 and 16, both on Sunday Night Football (NBC, 8:30 p.m.). The Steelers and Indianapolis Colts will square off in Week 13 (Dec. 6) at Heinz Field, and Pittsburgh will travel to Baltimore in Week 16 (Dec. 27).

The Steelers’ bye week will be on Nov. 22 (Week 11).

“Flexible scheduling” will be used in Weeks 11-17. Additionally, in Weeks 5-10, flexible scheduling may be used in no more than two weeks. In Weeks 5-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time.

Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game. For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to January 3. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

A select number of games will be “cross-flexed,” moving between CBS and FOX to bring potentially under-distributed games to wider audiences. Some of those contests were announced today while the remainder of “cross-flexed” games will be decided during the season.

Fans can listen to every Steelers game throughout the preseason and the regular season on the Steelers Radio Network on WDVE-FM (102.5) and WBGG-AM (970).

The Steelers also announced its Week 3 preseason game at the Buffalo Bills will kick off on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.

Welcome To Jerami Grant's Poster

Anyone outside the city of Philadelphia that tuned into SportsCenter on the evening of January 26 learned the name Jerami Grant very quickly.

It was a Monday night, and the Sixers were playing the Pelicans in the Big Easy. It was a game in which the athleticism of budding superstar, and former first-overall pick, Anthony Davis was on full display, but those watching were also treated to something special from the second-rounder, Grant.

Late in the game, the 21-year-old combo forward found himself matched up on the baseline against Pelicans seven-footer Jeff Withey, the 2013 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Kansas.

Grant preceded to blow by Withey in what seemed like one step, elevate on one side of the basket, and then stretch the totality of his 7’2” wingspan around to the other side to hammer home a thunderous one-handed dunk over the shot-blocking big man. Withey found himself on the wrong side of Grant’s first NBA poster, and the Sixers rookie found himself number two on the SportsCenter Top 10.

Grant spent two productive years honing his game under the tutelage of Jim Boeheim at Syracuse. While Grant only averaged 3.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 0.5 assists as a freshman in the Big East, those numbers swelled to 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in the ACC as a sophomore. After two years with the Orange, a 20-year old Grant thought it was time to test his mettle against the world’s best.

After unexpectedly falling out of the first round, Grant was scooped up by Philadelphia with the 39th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, allowing him to begin his career in the same place that of his father, Harvey, had ended. The elder Grant played 11 seasons in the NBA and finished his career in 1998-99 with the Sixers. Exactly 15 years later, his son, Jerami, would place the name Grant on the back of a Sixers jersey once more.

But Grant’s transition to the NBA was hampered by early obstacles.

On the first day of training camp, he had to be hospitalized due to dehydration, and soon after that he suffered a badly sprained right ankle. The injury kept the wiry 6’8” forward off the floor throughout the remainder of camp, the preseason, and the first 16 games of the regular season.

But on November 29, in a 109-103 loss to the Spurs, Grant made his debut, finishing with four points, three rebounds, and one block in 13 minutes of action.

But as he got his legs under him, signs of his massive potential began to show. There was an eight-block game against the Knicks on January 21, an 18-point outburst against the Cavaliers on February 2, several near-perfect shooting performances… but most importantly there were 1,377 minutes played. Grant played the second most minutes in Sixers history among rookies who played in 65 games or less. A clear representation of the faith head coach Brett Brown has in his ability to perform.

The comparisons to Kawhi Leonard by Brown were obvious, at least in terms of body type and early production. In Leonard’s first season, he averaged 11.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 2.6 combined blocks and steals per 36 minutes, while Grant posted 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.8 combined blocks and steals per 36 minutes. Leonard played in one more total game, and three more minutes per game.

This offseason will be extremely important for the third-youngest player on the Sixers roster, who just turned 21 in March. He has tremendous length and will be looking to continue to develop his jumper, as he increased his three-point attempts in each month of the season, ultimately attempting 4.3 per game compared to the 1.0 he attempted per contest in his first month on the floor. In two years at Syracuse, he attempted 20 total threes, but with the Sixers, he made 49 of the 156 he attempted (31.4%).
