Iowa Lt. Governor's Office
Branstad, Reynolds, Department of Education announce Iowa Financial Literacy Summit
March 9, 2015
A great education includes knowing how to make smart, responsible financial decisions. As part of a statewide effort to improve students’ financial literacy skills, Gov. Terry E. Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education today announced they will host an Iowa Financial Literacy Summit this spring and encouraged Iowans to get involved. The summit will be held on May 5 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.
“Financial skills are essential, which is why they are included in our state’s academic standards,” Iowa Department of Education Director Brad Buck said. “Still, we must do more to help students understand the power of being financially literate.”
The summit is open to all Iowans, including middle and high school students, parents, and educators. The event will include speeches from Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds, and Jack Kosakowski, chief executive officer of Junior Achievement, an organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
“We know our children need to be financially literate in order to have a bright future,” Branstad said. “We also know that financial literacy is critical for our state’s economic future. Many Iowans, including educators, financial services experts, and elected officials have expressed concerns about the status of financial literacy in Iowa.”
Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds said she witnessed the importance of financial literacy as a former Clarke County treasurer.
“I saw how far too many Iowans struggle to understand their rights and responsibilities when it comes to issues like tax payments and license fees,” Reynolds said. “Success in the 21st century requires being financially literate.”
Further details about the summit will be announced later this month. Tickets are available through April 21. To register, go to:https://www.educateiowa.gov/event/iowa-financial-literacy-summit
The summit will be paid for with funding from the Iowa Department of Education, registration fees and generous support from the private sector. Registration for the day is $50, with room for about 500 attendees.
The summit is part of a broader effort to bolster financial literacy awareness and support. That effort started in January 2014, when Buck convened a work team in response to growing concerns about whether Iowa students are learning the financial literacy skills they need to succeed.
The work team, made up of Iowans representing K-12 education, financial services, higher education and the Iowa Department of Education, recommended a review of state financial literacy requirements for K-12 schools as well as a study of how school districts approach financial literacy education. The group also recommended more centralized resources for teachers and tapping financial literacy experts to provide professional development training

PATE NAMES COPELAND TO AUDITOR'S ADVISORY GROUP
(DES MOINES) Today, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced the appointment of Des Moines County Auditor Carol Copeland to a key group that will provide advice and counsel on key elections issues. Copeland is one of just eight county auditors to serve on the advisory group.
"I am honored to be asked to be a part of this advisory group and look forward to working with the Secretary of State, his staff, and the auditors in this group," stated Copeland.
The Auditors' Advisory Group will explore policy, procedural and technical options within the area of elections and voter registration. This will include absentee balloting, expanding on-line voter registration, ballot security, and the growth in the use of absentee ballots.
"It is my privilege to welcome Auditor Copeland and I look forward to working with her to better serve the state of Iowa in expanding voter participation and protecting the integrity of the election process," stated Pate.
The advisory group will be led by Secretary of State Pate. Auditors from Woodbury, Union, Des Moines, Clay, Black Hawk, Page, Grundy and Linn Counties will be serving in this group.
Pate added, "There will be a free flow of ideas, concerns and best practices among the advisory members who are on the front lines of Iowa's elections. And while I recognize not everyone is always going to agree on everything, I believe that new ideas and solutions will emerge from this group."

Be Safe This St. Patrick's Day
Des Moines, IOWA – St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching. Unfortunately, this holiday has become a deadly day with a dramatic spike in drunk-driving fatalities.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2013, 40-percent of all crash fatalities during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend involved drunk drivers, and that number rose to 55-percent in the post-party hours of midnight – 6:00 a.m., of March 18. Almost 75-percent of those fatalities involved drivers who were twice the legal limit. Over the last four years, nationwide, drunk driving kills on average 68 people each St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
Don’t let your St. Patrick’s Day end in tragedy. Before you take your first sip of green beer, make a plan. If you become impaired and don’t have a designated driver, call a friend, relative, cab or use public transportation to get home safely. If you think a cab fare is expensive, consider the average $10,000 expense of getting an OWI, including higher insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, towing fees, lost wages, and other unanticipated expenses.
Be safe and smart this St. Patrick’s Day holiday! Extra law enforcement officers will be on the roads March 13-17, 2015, to keep Iowa motorists safe. Whether you’re buzzed or drunk, it doesn’t matter. Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving – drive sober.

City Of Iowa City Community Garden Plot Leasing Begins Monday, April 6
Posted on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 2:22 PM
The City of Iowa City will begin leasing garden plots for the 2015 growing season on Monday, April 6. This year, the City is offering two locations for community garden space -- Wetherby Park at 2400 Taylor Drive and Chadek Green Park at 1920 Friendship Street.
Those interested in leasing a plot can register at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street, beginning April 6. Plots are available on a first-come first-served basis, and interested parties are encouraged to arrive early on the first day of registration. Numbers to determine your place in line will be placed in the lower level lobby of the Recreation Center at 6 a.m. Those who leave the area will need to return by 7:15 a.m. as registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
Registrants will be required to sign a lease agreement to maintain the plot through Oct. 1, 2015. Water is available at both parks for registered gardeners; however, no hoses may be attached to the spigots. Water will need to be transported from the spigot to the garden plot by bucket or other means.
Plots will be tilled once at the beginning of the season by the City when weather permits. Gardeners must provide all of their own gardening tools and supplies.
Garden plots at Wetherby Park are offered in two sizes. There are 37 - 10'x50' plots available at $22 for residents and $27 for nonresidents. There are 68 - 10'x23' plots available at $12 for residents and $17 for nonresidents.
Garden plots at Chadek Green Park will be 10'x20' and are available at $12 for residents and $17 for nonresidents. The number of plots available at this location is yet to be determined.
