LATHAM, NY - The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has announced it has agreed to a historical partnership with the New York Yankees for one year.
“This is a landmark partnership for our Association and we are extremely excited to begin working with one of the most accomplished franchises in professional sports history,” said Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “Partnering with the Yankees not only allows us to partner with our first professional sports team, but it also provides great opportunities for our member schools, coaches, athletes and fans.”
The NYSPHSAA and Yankees have partnered to promote discounted Yankees game tickets to its members and an opportunity for member schools to be recognized at Yankees games in addition to financial contributions to support NYSPHSAA programs. Furthermore, NYSPHSAA schools will be able to use the partnership as a fundraiser and potentially be rewarded in the NYSPHSAA Community Service Challenge program. Both organizations will also co-brand and cross promote each other at various events during the year.
The partnership was just recently launched with the establishment of a URL for discounted tickets on the NYSPHSAA web site. Penn State Head Football Coach to Throw Out Ceremonial First Pitch
Penn State alumni, fans and supporters to have access to special ticket offer
Press Release | April 24, 2015
Today it was announced that Penn State Head Football Coach James Franklin, who helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 31-30 overtime victory over the Boston College Eagles in the 2014 New Era Pinstripe Bowl, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. Yankees-Rays game at Yankee Stadium.
In his first year as head coach at Penn State in 2014, Franklin led the school to their 45th bowl appearance all-time. The Nittany Lions' victory in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl was their 28th postseason victory, most among all Big Ten institutions and tied for third-most nationally.
"It's such an awesome opportunity to throw out the first pitch and take in a Yankees game at such an iconic stadium," said Franklin. "The Yankees' staff was great to work with and hosted a first-class event in the Pinstripe Bowl. The experience our student-athletes, coaches and staff had at Yankee Stadium in December was second to none. I am looking forward to taking the mound, maybe I will try to get some pitching advice from Masahiro Tanaka or Michael Pineda."
As part of the celebration, a special ticket offer with savings of up to 50% on select seats for Tuesday's game is now available for all Penn State alumni, fans and supporters. For complete details on the offer, fans should visityankees.com/psu15. Please note that all ticket specials are subject to availability.
In addition, Franklin will also be presented with a custom commissioned piece of art by acclaimed artist Lynn Mara that depicts Sam Ficken's game-winning kick in the final moments of Penn State's victory in the 2014 New Era Pinstripe Bowl. A native of Long Island, New York, Mara is known for her unique works that aim to form a connection between natural environments and the spiritual world.
Established in 2010, the New Era Pinstripe Bowl has seen increased attendance in each of its first five years of existence. In 2014, a record sellout crowd of 49,012 saw Penn State defeat Boston College and establish the bowl's highest all-time attendance figure.
The 2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl is scheduled to be played on Saturday, December 26, at a to-be-determined kickoff time. The game will mark the second consecutive year that the bowl will feature a team from the Big Ten and ACC. The Big Ten's partnership with the New Era Pinstripe Bowl is the conference's first ever bowl game tie-in on the East Coast.
Tickets for the 2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl will be made available in the near future. For up-to-the-moment information regarding the game, fans are encouraged to visit pinstripebowl.com, the official website of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, and follow the bowl game's official Twitter and Instagram accounts - @PinstripeBowl.

Deron Williams Answered Critics With His Play and Unified the Nets in 120-115 OT Win
Posted: Apr 28, 2015
BROOKLYN – Of all the insults and questions hurled at Deron Williams in recent weeks, perhaps none carried more sting than the insinuations that he is not a leader.
If a leader is one that unifies his team, then the breathtaking, 35-point performance that Williams turned in Monday night during the Brooklyn Nets, 120-115, OT win over the Atlanta Hawks in Barclays Center transcends his statistics.
“I’m excited about how the team rallied around him as well,’’ coach Lionel Hollins said after one of the most thrilling playoff wins in franchise history.
“That’s what this is about. I thought it was a huge, huge step in unity for our ballclub.”
So was the win. The Nets, who entered the series as the eighth seed, having qualified for the playoffs on the final night of the season, are now tied with the top seeded Hawks at two games each.
Game 5 is Wednesday night in Atlanta. A win there and the Nets return to Brooklyn with a chance to close out the series Friday night in Barclays Center, which seemingly set decibel records in these last two home playoff games.
Noise is something Williams has had his share of lately. Former teammate Paul Pierce criticized Williams before the Playoffs began. Former Indiana Pacers’ star Reggie Miller, now a TV commentator, jumped on the pile.
After Williams scored just two points in Game 2 and three points in Game 3, the naysayers ratcheted up the rhetoric in recent days. But Williams was getting support from all corners of the locker room.
Jarrett Jack, who entered the league in 2005, the same year as D-Will, said Williams was due for a big game.
Joe Johnson revealed that Williams had been playing through painful tendonitis in his right knee. Williams also bruised his tailbone in Saturday’s win. He wasn’t certain he could make it through Game 4.
No voice was louder than Hollins though, who on Sunday defended his starting point guard with the fervor of a John Grisham attorney.
“I’m disappointed in how everybody is coming down on Deron and trying to treat him like he’s a pariah," Hollins said Sunday. “Deron is a good person, he’s a good player."
He was the best player on the court Monday night and one of the best players in Nets playoff history.
His 35 points tied Williams’ playoff high. It was the highest playoff total by a Nets player since 2007, when Vince Carter scored 37 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Williams’ seven three-pointers (on 11 attempts) set a Nets franchise playoff record.
It’s not fair to say after this one performance that this is D-Will’s team. Brook Lopez, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds, remains the most consistent threat and the player the Hawks haven’t found a way to stop.
But the storm around Williams certainly has been calmed by his remarkable effort. And the Nets might finally have found the inner light they’ve been looking for all season.
“I think the locker room is in a great place right now," Williams said. “I think we’ve been very positive throughout this series. Even after those first two games we felt like we could play a lot better and we had chances to win both of them.
“I think we’ve been rallying around each other the last month or so and it’s just gotten better and better. Definitely the guys rallied around me and it means a lot. It just shows we’re definitely coming together as a unit. It’s taken longer than we thought but it’s happening.”

NEW YORK -– New York Knickerbockers President Phil Jackson announced today that the team has acquired forwards Quincy Acy and Travis Outlaw from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for guard Wayne Ellington and forward Jeremy Tyler. In addition, the Knicks have reduced the protection on the 2016 second-round draft selection acquired by Sacramento, via Portland.
Acy, 6-7, 225-pounds, holds career averages of 3.1 points, on 50.0-percent shooting, 3.2 rebounds and 12.9 minutes over 92 games in two seasons with Toronto and Sacramento. This past season, he averaged 2.7 points and 3.4 rebounds over 13.4 minutes in 63 games for the Raptors and Kings. The Tyler, TX native played collegiately for four seasons at Baylor University, and was originally selected by the Raptors in the second round (37th overall) of the 2012 NBA Draft.
Outlaw, 6-9, 210-pounds, holds career averages of 8.5 points, on 42.3-percent shooting, and 3.2 rebounds in 622 games (98 starts) over 11 seasons with Portland, L.A. Clippers, New Jersey and Sacramento. This past season for the Kings, he averaged 5.4 points and 2.7 rebounds over 16.9 minutes in 63 games. The Starksville, MS native was originally selected in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft directly out of Starkville HS.
Ellington, 6-4, 200-pounds, holds career averages of 6.4 points and 17.9 minutes in 312 games over five NBA seasons with Minnesota, Memphis, Cleveland and Dallas. He was originally acquired by the Knicks in a multiple-player deal with the Mavericks on Jun. 25, 2014.
Tyler, 6-10, 250-pounds, has averaged 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds over 9.9 minutes in 104 career games with Golden State, Atlanta and New York. The San Diego, CA-native, posted averages 3.6 points and 2.7 rebounds over 9.7 minutes in 41 games for the Knicks this past season after signing as a free agent on Dec. 31, 2013.
QB rotation begins at veteran minicamp
Posted 2 hours ago
Chris BrownBills InsiderEmail @ChrisBrownBills Blog: Inside the Bills
The quarterback competition began in earnest at One Bills Drive as the team hit the field for voluntary veteran minicamp.
Bills head coach Rex Ryan said in the early stages of offseason field work the rotation at quarterback would be as equal as they could make it. On day one of the veteran voluntary minicamp that proved to be the case for the most part.
“They all got reps,” said Ryan. “(Jeff) Tuel is probably the only one, he probably got a little bit shortchanged, but he did get a number of reps as well. But the top three were getting the exact same number of reps. Jeff (Tuel), he got plenty of reps, but it wasn’t the exact number those guys had.
“We’re definitely trying to get everybody in there, all the reps, everybody treated similarly. We want to see what everybody can do, not just one or two guys. That’s not just for the quarterbacks that’s for every position.”
For free agent signee Tyrod Taylor this is the best opportunity to compete for the starting job in his career having been behind Baltimore starter Joe Flacco on the depth chart the last few years.
“Just trying to come in and compete,” Taylor said. “Everyone is splitting reps. It’s our job to go out there and control the offense and show that we can be a leader and let the coaches decide who is the best man for the job. For me my job is to go out there and control the team and take command every time I’m under center and move the ball up and down the field.”
It’s a new beginning for EJ Manuel with a new staff and a new scheme. He and the other quarterbacks have been hard at work in the classroom mastering offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s system so they’re ready to execute it now that they’re on the practice field with their teammates.
“I’m very excited mainly because it’s a fresh start as far as learning a new offense and we can hit the ground running,” said Manuel. “(Quarterbacks) coach David Lee has done a great job making sure we know what we’re doing and knowing our protections and all that stuff. Coach Roman is doing a great job and today was basic install day one, but as we go forward we’re catching on to it pretty fast.”
Ryan wasn’t shy in sharing who left a good first impression in day one of what will be three days of practice sessions this week leading up to the draft.
“The thing I noticed with (Matt) Cassel, the ball comes out in rhythm, it’s here, boom, boom, boom, hitting it,” said Ryan. “EJ was impressive to me today. I’d still like to see it speed up just a tad, but he was impressive. Tyrod made some huge plays today. He throws a deep ball extremely well. You put him on the move he’s a dangerous weapon out there. Tuel wasn’t as impressive. There are a couple of things he’s got to get a little better at, but overall, I was impressed with the group.”
There’s little question that with all that Cassel has seen in his 10 seasons in the NFL that he has a leg up going in with no quarterback having any prior experience with Roman’s offensive system. Ryan admitted he saw that experience on display Tuesday.
“With Cassel you see it,” said Ryan. “Even in drills. You’re running out routes, bam, the ball is out there on time. It’s one of those things. When EJ sees it, he thinks, ‘OK, let me deliver it right here, before he hits that break.’ That’s when the ball needs to come out. I was impressed through, especially mentally, I was impressed with all of them.”
What left Ryan most encouraged about Manuel’s play was his ability to scan the whole field. He referenced a specific play in practice Tuesday when he saw one receiver open, but still scanned the whole field and found a better option on a “great throw” down the field.
“Clearly, to me, it shows he can see the field. That’s impressive to me,” Ryan said. “There was no question about it mentally. He was sharp. That part I was impressed with with EJ.”
Though the playing part of the quarterback competition began Tuesday, Manuel felt the competition began when the signal callers picked up their playbooks. He believes it’s almost a race to learn the offense as well as their offensive coordinator.
And for Manuel now entering his third NFL season he knows it’s a pivotal year in charting the direction his career takes from this point.
“I know this is a huge year for myself because we have a new head coach and it’s an open competition,” he said. “So obviously the third year is where a lot of the NFL quarterbacks, who are starters, really show that they can be a long-time starter for this team, or that the team can invest in this person for a long time for their franchise. I wouldn’t say it’s a make or break year, but I would say it’s a very important spring right now, which is most important.”
Even though the top three quarterbacks were told the reps would be evenly split before practice, Taylor wasn’t bothering to count reps. He was more focused on his execution in his time running the offense.
“I think the main key regardless of how many reps you get that you take the ones that you get seriously and make the best of them,” he said. “That’s what I tried to do today. Walking into practice I knew it was kind of going to be an even split, but you never know. The feel of practice can change things, so just try to make the best of the reps you get.”
Ryan freely admits in an ideal world he’d prefer to have an entrenched starter for his offense. At the same time he believes what his offense has are capable NFL options.
“I’m excited about the competition. I really am,” said Ryan. “I think all the guys, and you can throw Tuel in there, but I’m being realistic—the three top guys, in my opinion, you don’t know how it’s going to shake out. There’s not anybody who knows how it’s going to shake out. So I think it’s going to be interesting.
“The great thing is we’re going to give them a platform that will showcase what they can all do, and let’s see what happens. I feel good about the three guys. Is it a perfect situation? No, I’m not saying it is. But we have three guys, who in my opinion could be NFL quarterbacks. And we’ll see about the options as it goes forward. I think by the time we end it there will be a clear number one guy—that’s in an ideal world.”
Minicamp Notes & Quotes: Coples' View

LB Raps on His Role in Jets' New D; Ryan Fitzpatrick Talks Chan Gailey, QB Competition, Beard
Quinton Coples is counting his blessings today on the first day of the Jets' voluntary three-day minicamp.
Being back at the Atlantic Health Training Center, said the fourth-year LB, "This is another steppingstone for me. I've still got a lot of work to do to be a better outside linebacker. It's just a blessing."
But what if on Thursday night we draft a player that plays his position, an edge rusher, which many draft analysts could see happening with the sixth overall pick of the draft? Still a blessing.
"It's a business. There aren't be any hard feelings if someone comes in," said "Q." "We'll welcome him with arms open, teach him the system and go from there."
Yet that's not to say Coples is ready to give his job away. He likes the new system that head coach Todd Bowles and coordinator Kacy Rodgers are installing and what it could mean for him.
"A lot more rushing, so I'll be going against the quarterback a lot," he said. "I will be dropping a little bit as well but a lot more going forward. They don't need me in coverage any more, as you guys can tell."
That was a smiling reference to his duty in certain formations last year of trotting out wide to whack an opposing wide receiver at the line. But with the restocking of the secondary, starting with the returns of CBs Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, Coples said he won't be needed in that role anymore.
"Unbelievable. I mean it's a blessing," he said of the secondary. "We're excited as a front and looking forward to getting after the quarterback."
And Coples is ready to launch himself with renewed vigor. His roster weight last year was 290 but he said he didn't play anywhere near that. This year he thinks he'll be in the 270-275 range. He thinks that's a good neighborhood for him: "Leverage-wise I'll be able to play both the run and the pass. I think it's a good balance for my frame."
The only thing that would make this camp a complete blessing for Coples is the presence of DTMuhammad Wilkerson, who has stayed away from the voluntary offseason program and this camp.
"Mo's doing good. Obviously we'd love to have him here, but we understand the football business," he said. "I've been with him since high school. Whatever the situation may be, he's still cool, he's still my guy."
A New Ryan Heard From
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who arrived in trade from the Texans in March, hadn't spoken with Jets reporters until today's locker room session. He said his rehab from that broken leg late last season is coming along. He's not a full-go even at this no-contact camp, but he said, "I'm on pace right now to definitely be healthy for training camp."
He said he's "excited" to be reunited with Chan Gailey, his head coach with the Bills from 2010-12, and in his polite Ivy League fashion he stated he's ready to scrap for the starting job.
"Yeah, they brought me in here as a guy who's played a lot of football and a lot of football in this offense, to come in and compete and be a competitor," he said. "So for me, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to give everything I have in terms of being a great teammate and being the best player I can be and we'll see where that leads."
And Fitzpatrick guaranteed he won't be leading with his chin, even though his famous beard has been shorn away.
"It's just a spring cleaning," he laughed. "It'll be back, don't worry, it'll be back ... probably in the next few days."
What's in a Name?
Add LB Trevor Reilly to the roster of new fathers. And while last year's seventh-rounder is not a first-time father, he's the proud papa of a month-old son whose name, wouldn't you know, is Jett.
"Actually, I had a brother pass away 15 years ago whose name was Jett," Trevor explained, "so we named him after his uncle. Come to think of it, it is kind of ironic."
Reilly says his son was a 9-pounder so he thinks pro sports could be in his future. But maybe not defensive line or linebacker.
"How about kicker or punter? Long snapper?," he said. "Golfer?"

In the regular season, Diehl started 65 games at left tackle, 42 at left guard, 26 at right tackle and 27 at right guard. In the postseason, Diehl made 10 starts at left tackle and one at left guard. He also started the first 120 games (plus seven postseason contests) of his career, the longest such streak in franchise history since the introduction of the 16-game schedule in 1978. >> WATCH: PAUL DOTTINO PREDICTS GIANTS PICKSo the Illinois product knows not only what it takes to be versatile but also how to do it from Day 1. And Diehl, now an analyst, sees those traits in Iowa prospect Brandon Scherff, whom he projected to the Giants at No. 9 during a mock draft on Giants.com.

Photos: OT Brandon Scherff - University of Iowa
“Out of this group, I think the most NFL-ready is Brandon Scherff,” Diehl said. “I would put him at No. 9. He’s strong enough in the run game to move, at the point of attack, a defensive lineman and anchor down against the power rush.
He has the movement and hand placement in pass protection to redirect, to punch and anchor down against those bull-rushers and those big interior defensive linemen.
But the best thing that he brings outside of that versatility, he brings competition. Because there will be a competition between Brandon Scherff and Justin Pugh at either the left guard position or at the right tackle position.”

Equally as important, Diehl recognizes the same tenacity in Scherff that defined Diehl and his offensive line, which helped to lay the foundation for Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.
“I see that he’s a tough, physical, nasty player,” Diehl said. “He finishes guys. You always see him blocking to the whistle and sometimes after the whistle, which is good as an offensive lineman.
"But like I said, I think overall he is the pedigree of what you want in an offensive lineman. He is exactly the type of offensive lineman and the foundation that not only my group had but the foundation that the New York Giants have had and what Pat Flaherty, the offensive line coach, looks for in an offensive line.”
