Archer strikeouts to benefit Burg Baseball, Tampa RBI

Press Release | April 22, 2015

This season, every strikeout recorded by Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Chris Archer will benefit both Burg Baseball Inc. and RBI Baseball of Tampa. For every strikeout Archer logs, the righthander will join the Rays and WTSP 10 News to each donate $25 to be split among the youth leagues.

Archer struck out nine batters last night to take over the major league lead with 30, bringing the season total to $2,250.

"I've seen firsthand the positive influence that both of these organizations have on youth in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area," said Archer. "Since my time is often limited, I'm encouraged to do more monetarily to help these worthy leagues."

Burg Baseball Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides youth ages 4 to 16, from St. Petersburg families living at or near poverty level, with an organized baseball program, at little or no cost to the families of players. Since 2007, Burg Baseball has left a positive mark on the lives of over 1,600 St. Petersburg youth by teaching not only pitching, fielding, and batting skills, but also sportsmanship, character and teamwork.

"We share in the infectious enthusiasm and passion that Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays have in supporting our players and staff at Burg Baseball," said Burg Baseball President Charles Castle III. "The opportunity at stake for the young people of St. Petersburg is nothing less than growth-athletic, socioeconomic, personal and moral growth."

The Rays Tampa RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program has served the Tampa Bay area for more than 10 years as an MLB outreach baseball and softball program. For more than 500 inner city youth, Tampa RBI provides structured play, discipline and mentoring while fostering a culture of teamwork and respect.

"We are very excited about Chris Archer's strikeout campaign," said former major league outfielder and Tampa RBI Director of Operations Mark Whiten. "Our motto is simply: transforming lives one strike at a time thanks to Chris Archer, the Tampa Bay Rays and WTSP 10 News."

"Our station is excited to partner with Chris, the Rays, Burg Baseball and Tampa RBI," said WTSP 10 News General Manager Elliott Wiser. "It is important for our station to give back to the community we cover."

Payton: "I'm Looking Forward to Growing My Game"

By John Denton
April 22, 2015

ORLANDO – The Orlando Magic are on the outside looking in at the playoffs for a third straight year, but there is plenty of optimism for the future because of the on-court potential and off-court mentality of rookie point guard Elfrid Payton.

Why, just a week ago when the Magic’s regular season ended, Payton dejectedly sat at his locker following the final game. The rookie had just played his 82nd game of the season – the only Magic player to appear in every game – and he was hungry for more. His Magic had long since been eliminated from playoff contention, yet Payton didn’t like the bitter taste that came with being done just as basketball’s real season was about to begin.

Confidently, Payton predicted that he and his teammates would put in the work and make the necessary improvements to make sure that they are more of a factor next season.

``Next year, we’re going to be over the hump – simple as that,’’ predicted Payton, referring to the Magic’s tendency of losing close games this past season. ``We’ve got to continue to get better and the only way to do that is to put in the work. I know that’s what I’m going to do. This year was hard, but this offseason is a big one and next year we’ll be ready.’’

Payton proved himself plenty ready this past season, compiling one of the best rookie seasons in the NBA. He might have come into the league as the kid with the cotton candy-like hair that blows back as he streaks down the floor, but he left it last week being known as a difference-making point guard who can make plays both for himself and others. Despite hailing from a small school and having some wonder if he would ever be able to play at a high level in the NBA because of his obvious shooting deficiencies, Payton had an electrifying first season.

While leading all rookies in assists (6.5 apg.) and becoming the first first-year player to compile consecutive triple-doubles in 18 years, Payton vaulted himself into the running for the Rookie of the Year award. Undoubtedly, Minnesota forward Andrew Wiggins is the favorite and seasoned pros Nikola Mirotic and Nerlens Noel have had stellar seasons, but Payton is the surprise of the rookie class after being somewhat overlooked. Considering all of the doubts that surrounded the Magic trading up to get Payton last June on draft night, the rookie is proud that he has proven himself to be among the best first-year players in the NBA.

``It’s a blessing just to be considered,’’ Payton said of the Rookie of the Year award talk that surrounded him much of the season’s final month. ``I’ve put in the hard work and I’ve gotten better along the way. So to be recognized for what I’ve done now, it’s pretty cool.’’

There is no set date for when the NBA will announce the Rookie of the Year award, but it is expected to come sometime in the next two weeks.

The Magic have plenty of reason to be excited about the future what with second-year shooting guard Victor Oladipo and Payton in the backcourt. The two of them developed a nice chemistry throughout the season and were able to get the Magic plenty of easy baskets by pushing the pace in transition. And while both of them struggled at times with their outside shots, they made up for that by finding one another on cuts to the rim and dribble hand-off plays. Together, they see what they did in the 2014-15 season just the start of a long partnership together.

``This is just the tip of the iceberg of what we can do and we’re going to just keep getting better over time,’’ said Oladipo, who grew his game greatly while spending more time at the shooting guard position because of the addition of Payton at the point. ``E.P. had a great rookie season and we’re only going to get better together. We’re going to spend a lot of time together this summer and work on our games.’’

With Oladipo missing the first nine games of the season because of a facial fracture, Payton became the first rookie in Magic history to start on Opening Night at point guard. (Penny Hardaway – more on him later – started at shooting guard in 1993 alongside of point guard Scott Skiles). Payton wasted little time making his mark, equaling some NBA history by registering at least seven assists in his first four games as a pro.

Payton hit an invariable lull in the guts of the season, even losing his starting job for a period of time. But one thing that Payton is most proud of is the way that he improved as his rookie season progressed. He was the NBA’s Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for January (10.7 ppg., 6.9 apg., 4.3 rpg., 1.9 spg.) and he was even better in February (7.8 ppg., 6.2 apg., 5.1 rpg., 1.7 spg.), March (13.2 ppg., 8.4 apg., 5.9 rpg., 1.8 spg., 45.8 FG percentage) and April (9.5 ppg., 8.4 apg., 4.5 rpg., 3.3 spg., 64.7 FT percentage).

Payton said it wasn’t until the first of the year that he fully felt comfortable running the offense from the point guard position. It was then, he said that the speed of the game slowed down for him and he became a more instinctive player than one who was thinking so much about his next move. He also noted that a series of strong performances also helped him fully realize that he belonged at the NBA level and could thrive against basketball’s best.

``I’d say I started to get it going about January,’’ said Payton, whose post-All-Star numbers (11.1 ppg., 8.3 apg., 5.4 rpg., 2.1 spg.) dwarf those of his pre-All-Star numbers (7.9 ppg., 5.7 apg., 3.7 rpg., 1.6 spg.). ``I’m very proud of the fact that I got better as the season went along. It was my goal since summer league to get better each and every day. To see the growth that I’ve made that’s big time to me.

``You’ve got to put in the work and understand that there are going to be some trials and tribulations because not everything is going to be smooth along the way,’’ Payton continued. ``I’ve just tried to keep pushing and knowing that the results will come if I keep on working.’’

That strong finish – which included the consecutive triple-doubles against Dallas and Portland in mid-March – helped Payton make a strong run at Hardaway’s rookie record for assists with the Magic. Payton finished the season with 533 assists – just 11 shy of Hardaway’s team record. Just being mentioned in the same sentence with Hardaway – another do-everything guard who was a two-time first-team All-NBA selection – was awe-inspiring to Payton. And it also made him hungrier to keep pushing for more out of his career.

``That’s special to be up there with him. Penny was a great player and I just want to keep building on what I’ve done,’’ Payton said. ``I just want to keep getting better and maybe one day I can be the all-time all assists leader for the Magic.’’

Whereas passing the ball and racking up assists is an almost innate skill to Payton, shooting the ball is an area where he still needs an immense amount of growth. Too often last season, foes would go over screens rather than battling through them because they didn’t have to worry about Payton pulling the trigger on jump shots. Other times, foes – such as the Atlanta Hawks – dared the rookie to shoot and played him to pass, something that caused Orlando’s offense to bog down in a late-season loss.

For the season, Payton shot 42.5 percent from the floor, 26.2 percent from the 3-point line and 55.1 percent from the free throw line. Those numbers are quite similar to other rookie point guards such as Jason Kidd (38.5 FG percent, 27.2 percent and 69.8 percent), Rajon Rondo (41.8 FG percent, 20.7 3FG percent and 64.7 FT percent) and Derrick Rose (47.5 FG percent, 22.2 3FG percent and 78.8 FT percent) who came into the NBA as poor shooters.

Payton’s struggles were typical of most wide-eyed rookies. He shot significantly better at home (45.2 FG percent and 59.8 FT percent) than on the road (39.2 FG percent and 49.5 FT percent). He was significantly better in Magic wins (46 FG percent) than in losses (41 percent) and his percentage up was up a tick after the all-star break, giving him and others belief that he can be a solid shooter in the future.

``He’s going to be a special kid,’’ said Kidd, now the coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, before an April game. ``Just keep shooting and working at your craft. It takes time and he wouldn’t have the other (defensive and passing) strengths if he focused on just his shooting. He brings a lot more to the floor than just shooting because he plays both ends. It just takes time.’’

Payton is excited about the time ahead in his career because he feels like he laid a strong foundation for his career as a rookie. He said he will spend his summer working with shooting coach Dave Love – someone who worked wonders for fellow Magic rookie Aaron Gordon – and he wants to watch loads of game footage in an attempt to become a better on-court leader for the Magic.

The hope, Payton said, is to make enough progress over the summer so that he’s in a position to make the Magic a significantly better team next season – quite possibly one that is pushing for a spot in the postseason.

``I think I got off to a good start. I think I had a pretty good season, honestly,’’ Payton said confidently. ``This is what I expected. I expected a few ups and downs, but I expected to be better as the season went on. I think I did that and I think I set a nice base for myself. Now it’s time to improve.

``I think I can get a lot better and that’s my goal this summer,’’ he added. ``I’m looking forward to growing my game. I’ve got to become a better student of the game, work on my jump shot and become the leader that this team needs me to be.’’

View from the O-Zone: Caldwell misdirection part of pre-draft fun

Oehser: Little point in trying to forecast Jaguars GM David Caldwell’s pre-draft thinking – and that’s OK

JACKSONVILLE – He ate, smiled and chatted a little draft.

Actually, Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell chatted a whole lot of draft early Friday afternoon at EverBank Field. This being the Jaguars’ 2015 pre-draft luncheon, we expected nothing else.

Whether Caldwell said anything real …

Whether while he was talking about *this* he was actually meaning *that* …

Whether just about everything he said was misdirection, misinformation or – gasp! – sorta, kinda like a lie …

All of that we don’t know until next Thursday, and you know what?

That’s OK. In fact, if you’re a Jaguars fan it’s more than OK. It’s terrific and it’s par for the course, and if you think about it, it really adds to the fun.

Quickly, before we get to The Big Takeaway portion of this View from the O-Zone, here are a few things we did learn from Friday’s get-together:

*Caldwell likes the wide receiver class in this draft. A lot.

*He likes the running back class. A lot.

*He and the rest of the Jaguars’ personnel and coaching staff like three-to-five players a lot – enough for those players to shape their thinking in the draft.

All of that stuff is real. All of that you can pretty much take as absolute truth heading into next week’s Draft Week, which leads to Draft Night, which is the end of the longest, most-drawn-out, most interminable portion of the NFL Year.

As far as what else we absolutely, positively know about Caldwell’s pre-draft thinking –and therefore that of the Jaguars … well, there ain’t much. And Caldwell absolutely likes it that way.

Like any general manager, Caldwell is intentionally vague heading into the draft. That was even true of the aforementioned Big Takeaway from Friday’s event – that the Jaguars like three-to-five players at the top of this draft very much. Caldwell said he covets a true difference-making player over a couple of solid players, which meant a team wanting to trade for the Jaguars’ No. 3 selection will have to pay a substantial price to do so.

That’s solid thinking, and the Jaguars absolutely need such a player. At the same time, Caldwell also added that a couple of those coveted players could be available “relatively late,” meaning a trade isn’t absolutely, positively out of the question.

None of which is unusual, and if we know anything after Caldwell’s two drafts as general manager it’s that with five days remaining before the draft we probably don’t really know much at all.

This, after all, is the general manager who pulled off the remarkable feat last offseason of attending just about every meaningful quarterback pro day – Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater – and having everyone believe he wasn’t thinking quarterback at No. 3 overall. That’s a poker face on a pretty grand scale.

But the simpler, more-pertinent reason the Jaguars’ draft is so tough to read is that there simply are so many theories that make sense.

There’s the Pass Rusher Theory, the one based on Caldwell saying early in his tenure that there are three building-block positions tough to find later in the draft: quarterback, left tackle and pass rusher. Left tackle came in 2013 and quarterback came in 2014, so 2015 …

Well, you get the idea.

There’s also the Leonard Williams Theory, which is basically that the Southern California defensive end/tackle is simply too much the Best Available Player in this draft to pass.

There’s also the Help Blake Bortles Theory, which is that when you have a Top 5-draft quarterback you better have elite skill players around him. That begets the Take a Wide Receiver Theory, which makes Amari Cooper and Kevin White logical and intriguing selections.

All those are legitimate theories, and the Trade Back Theory is, too.

The guess here is the Jaguars stay at No. 3 and take Williams if he’s there. If not, the guess is they stay and take a pass rusher. If you believe there’s a difference-maker there, stay and get him. Take no chances.

BUCCANEERS RB BOBBY RAINEY SIGNS TENDER OFFER

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that restricted free agent running back Bobby Rainey has signed his tender offer.

Rainey (5-8, 212), originally joined Tampa Bay off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns in 2013. Last year, he played in 15 games, starting five, totaling 94 carries for 406 yards and one touchdown, while catching 33 passes for 315 yards and one touchdown.

Florida Panthers Re-sign F Jaromir Jagr

Sunday, 04.12.2015 / 1:37 PM ET / News

Florida Panthers

Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has re-signed F Jaromir Jagr to a one-year contract.

"Jaromir is a true professional in every sense of the word and a world-class player,” said Owner Vincent Viola. “This signing further shows our commitment to building a competitive and winning team in South Florida. In just 20 games, he has become a fan favorite and we look forward to his continued contributions to our organization.”

Jagr, 43, ranks first among active National Hockey League leaders in points (1,802), games played (1,550), assists (1,080), goals (722), plus/minus (+291) and power play goals (204). Among all-time NHL leaders, he ranks first in game-winning goals (129), fourth in points, fifth in goals, sixth in assists and 11th in games played.

“We are extremely pleased to have re-signed Jaromir,” said Tallon. “He found instant chemistry playing alongsideAleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. Jaromir’s intense work ethic and positive attitude has had a tremendous impact on our locker room.”

Since playing his first game with Florida on Feb. 28, Jagr has recorded six goals and 12 assists in 20 games with the Panthers. Over that span, Jagr has surpassed F Ron Francis for fourth all-time in points, F Phil Esposito for fifth all-time in goals, F Adam Oates for sixth all-time in assists and F Alex Delvecchio for 11th all-time in games played.

In all 20 games played for Florida, Jagr skated alongside F Aleksander Barkovand F Jonathan Huberdeau. The three forwards produced a combined total of 54 points (19-35—54) and 138 shots.

Jagr was acquired by the Panthers on Feb. 26 from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2016.

The 21-year NHL veteran has played for Pittsburgh, Washington, the New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, New Jersey and Florida. Jagr notched 15-straight 70-plus point seasons from 1992 to 2008, which stands as an NHL record. Jagr earned 50 or more points in 18 consecutive seasons, before recording 35 points during the 48-game 2012-2013 season. He again eclipsed the 50-point mark in 2013-2014 registering 67 points with New Jersey.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound forward won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and 1992. Jagr has recorded 78 goals and 121 assists in 202 career playoff contests.

Jagr was drafted by Pittsburgh with their first choice (fifth overall) in the 1990 NHL Draft.

BURNS: 3 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM GAME 5 LETDOWN

The Tampa Bay Lightning had all the momentum in their First Round series against the Detroit Red Wings entering Saturday’s Game 5. A miraculous comeback two days earlier, the Bolts down by two late only to score three goals in less than eight minutes providing the lift that would carry the team to a series win and onto the next round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Or so they thought.

Detroit came in to Tampa’s Amalie Arena on Saturday determined to atone for their late game collapse at the Joe. The Red Wings again built a 2-0 lead in the final period and this time choked the Lightning into submission with a suffocating defense that gave up few chances.

Tampa Bay, now on the brink of elimination, needs to win the next two, including Monday night’s Game 6 in Detroit to continue its run toward the Stanley Cup.

Plenty of things that went right for the Lightning in the regular season have suddenly disappeared. The three biggest?

1. REGULAR SEASON SCORING DOESN’T EQUAL PLAYOFF SCORING

The 2014-15 Tampa Bay Lightning scored more regular-season goals than any other team in franchise history.

The previous record of 246 established in 2005-06 was shattered when the Bolts netted 259 goals this season. Tampa Bay had more goals than any other team in the NHL (Dallas, with 257, was second) and averaged 3.16 per game.

In the playoffs, however, the Lightning attack has been systematically dismantled by a veteran Detroit team that has given the Bolts little room to maneuver on the ice.

The Red Wings were a middle-of-the-road defensive team during the regular season, their 2.57 goals-against average ranking 15th in the league.

Aside from Game 2 when the Lightning put five on the board, which, increasingly, is looking more and more like an anomaly, the Bolts haven’t been able to generate much of anything against Detroit in the postseason though. Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek, who split time with Jimmy Howard during the regular season and wasn’t handed the starting job for good until the conclusion of the regular season, has shut out Tampa Bay twice in his postseason debut.

But in reality, Mrazek hasn’t had to work all that hard as the players in front of him have done an outstanding job limiting the Lightning’s chances on goal. And when the Bolts do get something on frame, Mrazek has been steady in cleaning it up.

“They play their game,” Lightning center Tyler Johnson said. “They’re a good team, really good in the neutral zone, really good at staying above, covering guys. It makes it tough. We need to work as a unit on the ice, and we have to have the will and the heart to get there. At points of the game, I just don’t think we had that for whatever reason.”

The Lightning need to find that will in the next two days or their season will be over.

2. HOME-ICE DISADVANTAGE

When the Lightning rallied to win Game 4 in Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, the thought was the team would return to Amalie Arena where they’ve been nearly unbeatable all season, win Game 5 in front of their home crowd and give themselves two chances for the fourth and final victory of the series.

Unfortunately, in the postseason, the Lightning’s home-ice advantage has been anything but.

In three playoff games at Amalie Arena, the Bolts are just 1-2, a far cry from the sparkling 32-8-1 record they compiled at home during the regular season, the best home record in the league.

Tampa Bay was the only NHL team to win 30 or more games at home (Nashville, who was knocked out of the postseason by Chicago on Saturday, was second with 28).

The Lightning’s 32 home victories set a new franchise record, obliterating the old mark of 25.

All of which has meant very little to the Detroit Red Wings.

On Saturday, Detroit became the first team this season to shut out the Lightning on their home ice.

Now Tampa Bay will have to win once again at the Joe, a place they’ve struggled in recent times up until the final six minutes of regulation and overtime of Game 4, and again at home to salvage the season.

It’s not an impossible task, but it’s certainly not ideal either.

“Obviously, this is not over,” Lightning defenseman Anton Stralman said. “All we can do is win the next game. We just have to have the mentality that we’re going to bring and play our best game so far this year. I know we’re a really, really good team, and when everybody’s working in the same direction, I don’t think we did that tonight and that put us in a lot of trouble.”

3. CONSISTENTLY INCONSISTENT

Neither team has been able to get a foothold in the First Round series and win two consecutive games, both sides taking turns trading victories.

That bodes well for the Lightning in Game 6.

Not so much Game 7.

How much does that Game 1 loss, one in which the Lightning outshot Detroit 46-14 but still fell 3-2, hurt now?

When it appears the Lightning are about to seize control of the series, they stumble. After the Game 1 loss, the Bolts came out and played one of their best games of the season, demolishing the Red Wings 5-1 in Game 2, which was immediately followed by one of their worst performances in a 3-0 Game 3 loss in Detroit.

That slide continued for the better part of Game 4, until the Lightning awoke in the final six minutes of regulation to pull out an improbable overtime win.

The momentum from that comeback was lost somewhere on the return flight from Detroit to Tampa Bay, though, the Red Wings again regaining control of the series with Saturday’s blanking of the Bolts in Tampa.

“I’m very disappointed in the way we played,” Stralman said following the loss Saturday night. “Home ice, Game 5, it’s not acceptable to have that sort of a game. We played well for the first five, eight minutes in the first period, and in the third I thought we played well. That’s 25 minutes out of a 60-minute game. That’s not going to cut it against a team in the playoffs. That’s just the bottom line.”

The Lightning have made a habit during the postseason of playing well in spurts and then disappearing.

Now, they’ll need to find a way to play 120 consecutive minutes of good to great hockey or their summer vacation will start sooner than expected.

RALEIGH, NC – The National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes partnered with Bayer CropScience to host the second annual “Go Green Night” on March 28 when Carolina hosted the New Jersey Devils.

Prior to the game, the Hurricanes and PNC Arena held a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. Fans were asked to bring paint, solvents, aerosols, acids, batteries, propane tanks, fluorescent lights and other household items for responsible recycling. Hurricanes defenseman Brett Bellemore was on hand at the event to greet fans and distribute entry forms for fans dropping off recycling items. Those fans were entered to win one of two autographed green jerseys that the team wore during its pregame warmup.

“The amount of material collected and the great turnout is just another illustration of the team’s and this community’s commitment to the environment,” said Hurricanes Vice President of Corporate Partnerships Jim Ballweg.

The event yielded 1,392 pounds of household hazardous waste. The items collected included 85 pounds of aerosols, 468 pounds of latex paint, 572 pounds of oil-based paint and 105 pounds of batteries.

“We are proud to continue our ‘Go Green Night’ collaboration with the Carolina Hurricanes,” said Bayer CropScience President and CEO Jim Blome. “It fits perfectly with Bayer CropScience’s commitment to sustainability and leaving a better world.”
