NATIONAL FEDERATION OF STATE HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATIONS NEWS RELEASE Risk Minimization Key Focus of High School Spirit Rules Changes FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Susie Knoblauch INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 8, 2015) — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Spirit Rules Committee revised several rules for the 2015-16 season, all of which focused on minimizing risk to participants. At its March 7-9 meeting in Indianapolis, the committee made changes in the sections on inversions, non-release stunts, release stunts/tosses, suspended stunts and tumbling. The committee’s recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. In the section on tumbling, a new article was added stating that competitors cannot jump from a standing or squatting position backwards onto the neck, shoulders or hands. In the suspended stunts section, a new article was added stating that a top person must not be in a face-down position between bases in which the top person’s torso is suspended between the arms and legs. The committee noted that suspending a person face down with his or her arms and legs suspended backward above the torso increases risk. This addition to Rule 2-8 clarifies what body positions are illegal in a suspended stunt. The committee has to look at staying ahead of creative coaches and write rules to deal with new skills,” said Susie Knoblauch, NFHS director of performing arts and sports and staff liaison to the Spirit Rules Committee. “The committee attempts to look at how the stunts can be done safely as opposed to simply eliminating them.” In Rule 2-7 regarding release stunts/tosses, the committee eliminated Rule 2-7-3b, stating that the top person in a quick toss can continue in transitional stunts with minimal risk. Several changes were made in 2-7-6 regarding release transitions, including that the top person must be caught by the original base(s) and that the skills used before and after the release must be legal. Also, in 2-7-6b, the tick tock does not have to be multi-base, so non-braced, singlebase tick tocks that begin at or below shoulder level will be allowed. Regarding non-release stunts in Rule 2-6, the committee clarified that the top person can be moved to his/her sides in addition to a face-up or face-down position. Knoblauch noted that several revisions were approved in Rule 2-5 regarding inversions to provide more clarity to the rules. Among those changes is a new article permitting braced inversions in a pyramid that do not flip or roll provided several conditions are met, including that the top person does not begin in an extended inverted position. In addition, the Spirit Rules Committee agreed to expand the section on dance and drill/pom (Rule 3) in the 2016-17 NFHS Spirit Rules Book. A complete listing of all rules changes is available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org. Click on “Activities & Sports” at the top of the home page, and select “Spirit.” According to a survey of NFHS-member state associations in 2009, there are about 400,000 high school cheerleaders in the United States, including 120,593 who are involved in competitive spirit squads, which ranks ninth among girls sports according to the 2013-14 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS. There are also about 33,000 girls who participate in dance or drill/pom teams, according to the same survey.

With the 2014-15 campaign written and closed, Suns.com’s Matt Petersen takes an end-season look at each member of Phoenix’s roster heading into the summer. Key points include what went well, what could be improved, and a notable advanced stat for each player are included, as is their offseason status with the team.

MORE REVIEWS: Earl Barron | Eric Bledsoe | Reggie Bullock | Archie Goodwin | Danny Granger

Danny Granger

Bio: 6-5, 198 pounds, 20 years old

History with Suns: Traded to Phoenix from Miami on Feb. 19, 2015

2014-15 stats: 20.4 mpg, 6.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 35.7 3FG%

Offseason status: Player option for 2015-16

What Went Well

The quiet winner of the trade deadline might just have been Granger. After battling injuries for teh vast majority of the last three seasons, the former All-Star and Team USA member got extended time and treatment with/from the Suns' renowned training staff.

Phoenix is an intriguing place for Granger, who is having a home built here after the city left a lasting good impression on him and his wife in their college years. Between that, the medical staff and a need for veteran leadership on a young team, there are plenty of reasons for Granger to remain in the Valley.

What Could Be Improved

Health is priority number one for Granger, who averaged over 20 points a game in three consecutive seasons before his injury woes commenced. Now 32 years old, he'll try to use the advice he received in a long phone call with Grant Hill, a guy who knows something about taking advantage of the Suns' fountain of youth.

"I spoke to Grant Hill on the phone for a long time," Granger said. "He gave me pretty much his experience here and how it helped his career. Hopefully it will help mine the same way."

Notable Advanced Stat: Granger doesn't need a lot of time or activity to get off a quality shot. The veteran forward averaged 58.3-percent shooting on shots taken after one dribble this season.

Quotable: “Talent wins in this league. That's one thing you can't win without. I think this team has a lot of that, a lot of young promising talent. Just getting it all on the same page is what you need.” – Danny Grange

Draft Primer 2015: Wide Receivers

Position deep in this year's draft, and Cardinals might just seek one out

Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong is one of many high-profile pass catchers expected to go in the first two rounds of the draft.

The NFL draft will be held from April 30 through May 2 in Chicago. The Cardinals addressed several needs in free agency and are now zeroing in on their draft targets. We’ll take a look at each position over the next few weeks.

Top available wide receivers in draft

Analysis: The Cardinals’ top four receivers from a year ago are back, and the coaching staff likes its depth at the position. No one reached the 1,000-yard plateau in 2014, but that had more to do with injuries at quarterback than inconsistency from the wideouts. Michael Floyd, Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown are set to return as the three main targets, while Jaron Brown is the clear fourth receiver following the offseason release of Ted Ginn.

While the unit looks formidable for 2015, wide receiver could be a target in the draft if General Manager

Steve Keim takes a longer view. The Cardinals have a fifth-year option on Floyd, who would cost $7.32 million in 2016 if it is exercised by May 3. If not, he would be scheduled to hit free agency after this season. Fitzgerald has two more years on his contract and will be 33 when it expires.

The draft is deep at wide receiver, with as many as seven prospects – Alabama’s Amari Cooper, West Virginia’s Kevin White, Louisville’s DeVante Parker, Central Florida’s Breshad Perriman, Arizona State’s Jaelen Strong, Miami’s Phillip Dorsett and Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham – with a realistic shot at going in the first round. Last year’s draft class was stellar, as players like Odell Beckham, Jr., Mike Evans and Sammy Watkins made immediate impacts, and this year’s top picks could also pay immediate dividends.

The Cardinals could also look at a mid- or late-rounder speedster as a deep threat and returner on special teams. Ginn had that role last season but his production didn’t live up to his contract, and a draft pick could conceivably fill that role at a cheaper cost. The Cardinals have options here entering the draft: they could bypass wide receiver and move a player like Brittan Golden into the fifth spot next season, or add a player to the mix for 2015 and beyond.

Although official rosters have yet to be announced, defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who led the Coyotes with 23 goals and 43 points in 2014-15, is expected to play for Sweden.

"It’s going to be fun," Ekman-Larsson said. "It’s always an honor to represent your country, so I’m really excited for that. It’s going to be a good time."

Ekman-Larsson has played for Sweden before, most recently at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The Swedes finished second to Canada there.

While Ekman-Larsson won a silver medal at Sochi, Coyotes goalie Mike Smith captured a gold medal there with Canada. Smith will attempt to win another gold at the World Championship.

"Any time you have an opportunity to play for your country it’s an honor, even though it’s not the highest stage like the Olympics," Smith said. "But I will have a chance to play some games there and I get to go to Prague, which is not a bad place. And it’s good to get your body used to playing this time of the year."

Three Coyotes are expected play for the United States at the World Championship. They are defensemen Connor Murphy and John Moore, and forward Mark Arcobello. Meanwhile, rookie Tobias Rieder is slated to play for Germany and forward Martin Erat will play for Czech Republic.

Television coverage of the World Championship within the United States will be announced at a later date. In past years, NHL Network and NBC Sports Network have aired various games.
