Indiana Chamber Supports Amendment to RFRA Law
Published on April 2, 2015
April 2, 2015 (INDIANAPOLIS) — Indiana Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kevin Brinegar reacts to the proposed clarification to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA):
“Our state has suffered tremendously the past week. It was absolutely essential to clarify and affirm that Indiana’s RFRA law does not permit discrimination against any person or group of people. The legislative amendment spells out that Indiana will not permit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. That’s what businesses and individuals from around the state, country and world needed to hear.
“We believe this effort begins to help re-establish Indiana’s identity as a welcoming place and will go a long way toward reversing the tide of negative sentiments that has threatened our state’s economy.
“We encourage the General Assembly to pass this legislation in a bipartisan fashion today to show the nation that Indiana is united in sending the message that our state is a hospitable one which does not discriminate.”

Southwest Indiana Chamber Named Chamber of the Year
The Southwest Indiana Chamber today announced it has been named 2015 Indiana Chamber of the Year.
The Chamber of the Year award is presented annually by Indiana Chamber Executives Association (ICEA) to a chamber of commerce in Indiana that has demonstrated exceptional performance in four categories: leadership and governance; finance; advocacy; and programming and membership.
A panel of judges from outside the state reviews award applications then selects the year’s finalists and the top chamber of commerce. To be considered for the award, a chamber of commerce must submit a detailed application that includes 10 essays and dozens of work examples, such as the organization’s strategic plan and press clippings.
The Southwest Indiana Chamber launched new initiatives in 2014, which helped the organization earn its Chamber of the Year recognition, according to Indiana Chamber Executives Association President Shelli Williams. “The Chamber is focused on its members’ needs and has seized opportunities to serve the Southwest Indiana region with new initiatives like its Downtown Alliance, Diverse Business Alliance, and Nonprofit Alliance.”
Other achievements cited in the award application submitted by the Southwest Indiana Chamber include: a net gain of 359 members in 2014 and an improvement in ranks from third-largest to second-largest chamber of commerce in Indiana; the launch of the new Southwest Indiana Chamber brand, new website, and new fully-integrated membership database; the launch of the organization’s Diverse Business Alliance, Nonprofit Alliance, Restaurant Alliance, and Downtown Alliance; the success of the Chamber-led restaurant competition called “Evansville’s Main Course Restaurant Challenge”; and improved financial performance led by an increase in sponsorship and event-generated revenue.
“When it comes to serving our members, we’ve set the bar high,” Southwest Indiana Chamber board of directors Chairman Jeff Mulzer said. “This award recognizes the organization’s dedicated, passionate, and enthusiastic volunteers, board of directors, and staff. As we celebrate a century of supporting the business community, we can add this significant milestone to our Chamber’s history and continue our commitment to commerce.”
Past recipients of the Chamber of the Year award include the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce (2014), the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce (2013), the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County (2012), the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce (2011), and the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce (2010).

ROUNDABOUT COMING TO 111th AND PENNSYLVANIA IN CARMEL; CONSTRUCTION TO START MONDAY
CARMEL, IN – The City of Carmel will begin working on construction of a roundabout at the intersection of 111th Street and Pennsylvania Street, beginning Monday, March 30. The $1.5 million dollar project calls for constructing a new roundabout intersection with curb and gutters, storm sewers and sidewalks. Rieth Riley is the primary contractor that will manage the construction.
The intersection of 111th Street and Pennsylvania Street will be closed beginning Monday, March 30, for approximately 60 days. The detour routes will be as follows:
111th Street: Westbound 111th Street traffic will be routed north on College Avenue, west on 116th Street, south on Illinois Street and resume on 111th Street. Eastbound 111th Street traffic will be routed north on Illinois Street, east on 116th Street, south on College Avenue and resume on 111th Street.
Pennsylvania Street: Southbound Pennsylvania Street traffic will be routed east on 116th Street, south on College Avenue and west on 106th Street to Pennsylvania Street. Northbound Pennsylvania Street traffic will be routed east on 106th Street, north on College Avenue and west on 116th Street to Pennsylvania Street.
The roundabout construction is a City of Carmel project funded mostly by federal highway safety improvement funds. It is being constructed in conjunction with the 111th Street overpass over US 31. The intersection qualified for Highway Safety improvement funds due to the high numbers of accidents, including one fatality. Ninety percent of the project will be funded through federal highway way safety improvement funds, while the remaining ten percent will be fulfilled by the City. The city’s portion of the construction cost will be roughly $150,000, funded through funds from the Engineering Department.

Riverview Health, through its corporate wellness program, recently completed the third annual “Waist Reduction” weight-loss challenge. Beginning on January 12, employees from the City of Noblesville, Hamilton County, Meyer Najem, Noblesville School Corporation, Riverview Health and Westfield Washington Schools competed against one another in the spirit of health and wellness. This eight-week program was developed to build a sense of community and to provide an incentive for the new year to make lifestyle changes through healthy eating, exercise and weight loss.
Participants were challenged to lose weight, with the top prize—a $200 Amazon gift card provided by Riverview Health—awarded to the participant with the highest percentage of weight loss at the end of the program.
This year’s winner was Mitch Mosbey of Noblesville School Corporation with a 14 percent body weight loss.
“I always knew weight loss was needed to live a healthier life. Being a competitive person, I knew this weight-loss competition would motivate me to exercise more,” Mitch says. “In addition to attending the exercise classes offered through the program, I began to increase my physical activity throughout the week. The information sessions also helped me improve my diet.”
With an average weight loss of three percent, the traveling trophy has been given to the City of Noblesville for being the winning organization.
“A total of 257 pounds were lost by all participants throughout the eight-week program,” said Mindi Matthews, director of Health & Wellness at Riverview Health. “Aside from the weight loss, the great thing about this program is it gets people to establish a healthier lifestyle. A follow-up survey reported more than half the participants who started a fitness program will continue it.”
Program offerings included two weekly 50-minute exercise classes at Riverview Health Rehab & Fitness in Noblesville. Exercise formats included Pilates, boot camp, yoga, Boxing Fusion, aerobics and PiYo. Riverview Health also offered three 30-minute wellness presentations lead by a health coach, registered dietitian and exercise specialist.

DePauw University, Hendricks Regional Health and Putnam County Hospital Announce Innovative New Partnership
DePauw University announced today a new and unique partnership with Hendricks Regional Health and Putnam County Hospital, focused on creating a wellness-centered college campus unlike any other in the region. This innovative hospital-university collaboration will significantly expand medical services and wellness programming to the school’s students, faculty and staff.
The partnership is the product of the University’s goal to create a more holistic and integrated healthcare environment. In total, it will bring enhanced wellness offerings and healthy lifestyle programs, made possible by a new on-site wellness center that will provide primary care services for employees and students. Other elements of the partnership include healthcare-focused experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students, along with targeted health services and wellness initiatives.
“Supporting the complete health and well-being of our DePauw community is paramount to having an environment that promotes creativity, critical thinking and engagement,” said DePauw University President Brian W. Casey. “Collaborating with Hendricks Regional Health and Putnam County Hospital will position DePauw as a wellness-focused institution that is set apart from other liberal arts colleges. This partnership lifts up our overarching goal to foster intellectual challenge and create a vibrant campus culture in ways that prepare our students for lives of purpose and accomplishment.”
The partnership brings both expanded services as well as cost saving opportunities for DePauw and its employees. Estimates project that the university will realize a savings over a ten-year period of $4.7 million gross and $1.9 million in net savings. DePauw employees participating in the university’s health plan, and their dependents, will be able to reduce their out-of-pocket medical expenses by using the clinic and its free or reduced cost services. For example, a family of four, with a typical healthcare utilization rate as defined by the National Center for Health Statistics, would gain a potential savings of $1,220 annually when leveraging the partnership’s offerings.
Hendricks Regional Health, with support from Putnam County Hospital, will provide DePauw students, faculty and staff with on-site access to preventive healthcare, injury and illness care, health coaching and wellness programs, condition management, pharmacy and medication management. Clinical experts including physicians, nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals also will provide integrated health education on topics such as healthy eating, physical fitness, stress management, sexual health, tobacco cessation and substance abuse prevention.
Services will be available to the 2,250 enrolled students, as well as more than 600 faculty and staff participating in the university’s health plan, along with their dependents. In addition, the hospital partners will collaborate with athletic staff to provide athletic training, sports medicine and physical therapy for 550 student athletes participating on DePauw’s 23 intercollegiate sports teams.
Other aspects of the partnership include a program supporting the special health and wellness needs of DePauw’s music students. Healthcare providers will work in tandem with music faculty and staff to provide baseline screening and implement protocols for prevention of performance-related injuries and hearing problems by providing targeted education, training and resources.
Community-based programs, such as an expansion of the Indiana Pacers Bike Share program, on the DePauw campus and in the City of Greencastle are also planned.
Services will begin by August 1, 2015, with the opening of a temporary on-site wellness center location. The University and its partners are seeking a long-term facility solution to house the growing health and wellness program.
The partnership represents the latest move by the Danville, Indiana-based Hendricks Regional Health into on-site healthcare and wellness, with a specific focus in developing tailored wellness programs and tools that educate and engage employees.
“Our organizations share a vision to build something unique at DePauw, bringing health and wellness to the forefront for the entire university community,” said Kevin P. Speer, President & CEO of Hendricks Regional Health. “We are excited for this opportunity to positively impact the health of those served by DePauw while helping the university lower healthcare costs. We believe this partnership has what it takes to make DePauw University among the healthiest college campuses in the entire nation.”
Current healthcare services for both students and employees will be modernized to include a secure electronic medical record system that will improve continuity of care. A web-based scheduling system will create an easy access point for health services, while a digital tracking tool will help participants succeed in their wellness goals.
The partnership will extend beyond medical services to encompass opportunities for student experiential learning through internships, clinics and job shadow experiences. Coordinated through DePauw’s Hubbard Center for Student Engagement, students will have opportunities to explore a variety of healthcare disciplines within the Hendricks network; medical experts will also participate in on-campus educational programming.
Additional health and fitness initiatives will launch in conjunction with the new clinic, designed to foster a fit-friendly campus environment. “We are working on implementing outside-of-the-box initiatives like a bike share program through our partners at the Indiana Pacers,” said Speer. “These types of programs will encourage staff and students to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routine.”
Putnam County Hospital further complements the joint venture through its network of high-quality health services and medical specialists. Located in Greencastle, Putnam County Hospital has been caring for the communities neighboring DePauw University for nearly a century.
“DePauw has set its sights on an exceptional goal and we couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it,” said Dennis Weatherford, Putnam County Hospital CEO. “Not only do they have the potential to become one of the country’s healthiest campuses, they are also laying the groundwork to provide inventive and customized wellness services and programs to their employees as well. In a time when many employers are cutting back on health coverage, DePauw is enhancing benefits while working directly with healthcare organizations to reduce medical expenses.”
Jeff Hadden, a partner at LHD Benefit Advisors, provides counsel to DePauw regarding its health benefits programs and has significant experience leading employers through the launch of on-site healthcare initiatives. “From the clinic’s second year of operation moving forward, it should reduce the University’s healthcare spend by a minimum of two percent annually,” said Hadden. “Additionally, employees will experience a reduction in out-of-pocket medical and prescription drug costs by using the Clinic.”
“This partnership is unique and differentiating for DePauw,” Hadden added. “The wellness programming and adoption of updated technology will create the opportunity for enhanced services and improvement in the overall health status of the DePauw community beyond what has been historically demonstrated.”

Hendricks Regional Health Donates Technology to Avon Community School Corporation
Avon, IN – Hendricks Regional Health recently donated over 400 computers to Avon Community School Corporation (ACSC) for use by students, faculty and staff. The donation was part of an ongoing, comprehensive community partnership between the two organizations.
In August 2013, Hendricks Regional Health expanded its partnership with Avon School Corporation to include a wider spectrum of health and wellness initiatives. As the school system’s exclusive healthcare provider, the hospital provides sports medicine care and athletic training for student athletes and the Avon High School marching band. In addition, the collaboration includes health programming for school employees through an on-site wellness clinic and healthy lifestyle support by certified wellness coaches.
The donated technology includes 412 desktop computers and 25 monitors. The computers were replaced as part of a hospital-wide infrastructure upgrade. The provided devices are compatible with the latest operation system and programs, and are ready to be put into service.
ACSC is already replacing the oldest computers throughout the district. The computers will be in use in classrooms allowing students to access learning applications that were not previously available because of the age of some of the equipment.
“We have embraced our role as the exclusive healthcare partner to Avon Community School Corporation and want to support the organization’s efforts – whether it be on the playing field, in the community, or the classroom,” said Hendricks Regional Health President & CEO Kevin Speer. “Technology is a critical component in the learning environment, and can help engage students in their education. We are truly excited to be a part of that.”
“We certainly appreciate such a generous donation from our partners at Hendricks Regional Health,” stated Dr. Margaret (Maggie) Hoernemann, Avon Community School superintendent. “The computers will enhance the learning environment for thousands of our students. Having updated technology is a crucial component in the education process.”
Since 1962, Hendricks Regional Health has served as the area's leading healthcare provider by delivering innovative care with a personal touch. The hospital strives to be the indispensable healthcare partner to patients, payers, physicians, associates and employers.
